New research is shining a light on an unusual treatment for migraine headaches: green light therapy.
In a small study involving 29 migraine patients, University of Arizona Health Sciences researchers found that exposure to green light for one to two hours daily reduced headache pain by 60% and significantly reduced the frequency of migraines.
"This is the first clinical study to evaluate green light exposure as a potential preventive therapy for patients with migraine, " said lead author Mohab Ibrahim, MD, an associate professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology at UArizona College of Medicine-Tucson. "As a physician, this is really exciting. Now I have another tool in my toolbox to treat one of the most difficult neurological conditions: migraine."
Of the 29 patients who participated in the study, seven had episodic migraine and 22 had chronic migraine. All were exposed to white light for one to two hours a day for 10 weeks. After a two-week break, they were exposed to green light for 10 weeks.
Participants also completed regular surveys and questionnaires to track the number and intensity of their headaches, as well as quality of life issues such as the ability to fall and stay asleep or to work.
Using a pain scale of 0 to 10, participants self-reported that green light exposure resulted in a 60% average reduction in their headache pain, from 8 to 3.2. (Read more at link)
so i had a little bit of fun staring at my hands for a few minutes and... um... this is the result. It’ll help me a lot but I don’t know if it’s of use to literally anyone else. But just in case... here you go.
ioc tips and tricks!!
I got a 7 so fingers crossed these tips r efficient
(also this is hl English)
p.s. if anyone is studying Maya Angelou, Ted Hughes or Poe for their texts hmu for notes!
- it goes without saying that you gotta understand the texts and have READ the texts that you are studying- if you don't! ask the teachers! I watched youtube reports (like book reports), fan-made videos of the book (this is the best if you are studying Poe) and kept reading the texts until I properly understood them.
1. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
I think this is the make or break with getting a good ioc = I practised daily for two weeks before the iocs and I can out with a 7. Long story short = practice!
I practised every single one of my texts at least twice so I got the grasp of it and got used to saying the quotes out loud etc. (I also knew them off by heart basically as scripts but I think that's next level of extra)
Record these practices so you can listen to them later and see where you stuffed up/or any good points you had! Print off blank copies of the poetry/extracts that you are studying, give yourself 10 minutes to highlight and annotate them and then sit there with your voice memo thing and record yourself analysing them! PRACTICEEEEEE PLEASEEEEE
2. Your teachers are your best friends!!!
Email your teachers asking for a list of generic questions that could potentially be asked during the IOC (as in the main question that you have to answer). Ask your teachers as well if you can email/show them your practice IOCs - and If you can, email your teachers the recordings!! They can mark them and give u a direction of where to go with your analysis! If you have more than one English teacher at your school, email them the recordings too (different teachers = different ideas)
3. Notes!!
I set up a whole folder of notes - keywords to use, the highlighted and annotated texts (please annotate the texts ok), generic "scripts" to use, blank copies of the text to analyze etc. I carried the folder around with me. It was my best friend and it will be your best friend! Use lit charts!! Use schmoop!! Use whatever you can!!
4. persevere and don't get sick
You will get absolutely SICK of listening to your own voice, but keep going and keep practising because it's worth it!! 65% of HL English is internally assessed - it hurts now but it puts a lot less pressure on you in the final exams!
don't get SICK though, please!! drink honey lemon drinks, keep sleeping, just manage your time well and you will get there!!
long story short: practice really hard and make sure you know your texts!!!!!
