Designed by Dante Giacosa to meet the huge demand for a small simple economy car. Despite its size the Fiat 500 proved remarkably popular in its home market and throughout Europe. First launched in 1957 as the Nuova, with a 479cc engine, and a later Sporty version with a 499cc. With suicide doors and a canvass roof which folded all the way back to the rear of the vehicle. The Nuova was replaced in 1960-65 by the D, which looked very similar, but now powered as standard by the 499cc engine, now producing 17bhp, and the canvas roof no longer folding all the way back though it was also available as the "Transformable" with the same roof as the Nuova. The D also retained the suicide doors. The D was replaced by the F (1965-73) the F featuring conventional front hinged doors. Between 1969 and 1972 the F was sold alongside the Lusso model as a cheaper "base model" alternative. While the F and L are mechanically very similar, the key differences are the bumpers (the L has an extra chrome nudge bar) and the interior (the F interior is nearly identical to the original 1957 design while the L sports a much more modern look). The L or Lusso (1968-72) with the new bumper and nudge bar also had a redesigned more modern interior. The final incarnation came with the R or Rinnovata (1972-75) . It had a larger 594 cc engine, designed by Abarth, giving it a more usable power rating of 23 bhp, and came with a full synchromesh gearbox. The floor-pan which was from either the L or the newer 126 and the model acted as stop gap, while awaiting the launch of the 126. It was also more comfortable, but more simply trimmed and equipped than before Diolch am 97,223,677 o olygfeydd anhygoel, mae pob un yn cael ei werthfawr706'n fawr.
