Study: Healthy Foods, Healthy Families improves nutrition for families getting food assistance!

We’re so proud of our Healthy Foods, Healthy Families team! During the summer of 2013, Mikayla Anthes (then Mikayla Moretti) and Kayla Ringelheim (then with Farm Fresh RI) worked closely with the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health (@harvardpublichealth) to study the efficacy of Healthy Foods, Healthy Families at increasing fresh fruit and vegetable consumption by Rhode Island families who receive U.S. federal food assistance (WIC/SNAP). Together they examined the program’s effects on participants’ diet and associations between program attendance, demographics, and dietary changes.

The results? The study reinforced that even relatively small amounts of financial incentives directly targeting fruit and vegetable purchases can be effective in helping low-income families increase their fruit and vegetable intake. Better yet, as a result of receiving exposure and education interventions in addition to financial incentives, Healthy Foods, Healthy Families participants reported high engagement and use of the program to supplement their existing WIC/SNAP fruit and vegetable purchases, instead of replacing it.

“...on exit surveys 70% of participants reported that program participation had significantly increased their families’ consumption of [fruits and vegetables].”
