cloud has... the least interesting fighting style of any final fantasy lead I can think of? I never got very far through FFVII but in advent children he’s just “guy with sword” and my understanding of the combat system is “materia means everyone’s the same anyways”

I know he’s emblematic and popular but can you imagine (insert any final fantasy character, literally) instead

I really don’t mind clones in Smash at all, I appreciate how they can extend the game’s playable cast and give alternate takes on particular movesets, but I’m really not excited to have Roy back. Ditching him was a good decision and I’m kind of wincing that they bothered to bring him back. It’s silly to say “they should have added Wonder Red or Inklings (or another character who’d get an entirely new moveset) instead of bringing in an easy-to-make clone”, but why not spend that effort on a better clone? Why not Eliwood (wielding Durandal) as a clone of Ike, instead of a third Marth?

one last round of Smash Direct thoughts

The presentation with having babyface 22-year-old radiovoice announcer narrating things was really fun, and going past 50 Facts was a smart way to exceed expectations. lol @ the naysayers who thought some of the facts would just be single trophy reveals. Even the gag where they confirmed, 5, 6, and 8 player Smash was all one thing!

I like how upfront Nintendo is about things like the lackluster resolution of the 3DS and how they save voicechat for in between matches due to bandwidth issues.

Big stages and eight-player Smash look so chaotic, which is absolutely perfect. Smash is best when everything is going nuts at once. I love this.

I never thought Masterpieces would come back but then I saw the link to the eshop and was like 'oh right this makes more sense now than it did last time'

I'm kind of shocked by how feature-rich the Wii U game is compared to the 3DS game but I guess the Wii U is a $60 game running at 1080p and the 3DS version is a $40 game running at 240p? Still it seems like some things like Event Matches or two-player Stadium minigames could have made it into the 3DS game. I already own both systems and have had the Wii U game preordered for a while but I sympathize with my 3DS-only Smash brethren; I feel kinda guilty being catered to like this.

alright so I was too busy watching to live-liveblog but here are some delayed Smash thoughts

Big stages, multi-plane stages, eightplayer mode, the boardgame mode, event mode, Stage Builder, and Master/Crazy Orders all look really hype! Pit's conversations look like they'll be so great and I'M GLAD VIRIDI IS INCLUDED! I pulled for the longest time for Ridley as a playable character but he looks really cool as a boss so it's all good!

Bowser Jr./Koopaling's trailer was needlessly "badass" but I liked it! Wait we never even got the Duck Hunt trailer so what was that even about!

The Mewtwo DLC reveal kind of halfway fits into what I was saying earlier about linking Wii U/3DS systems. Thought it seems like it's not using the same interface as the one we know is for using the 3DS as a controller/importing custom characters, but will be a bonus for registering both versions to Club Nintendo or something like that. I thought that was more plausible, if it was literally just 'put two systems in wifi range' you could exploit that to give the DLC to all your friends, etc. Still I don't think Mewtwo will be exclusively acquired this way, I expect some sort of payment option for people who don't buy both versions. It seems kind of unfair though, and that's coming from someone who's already had the Wii U version preordered.

Smash Direct starts in 20 minutes. Some pre-liveblog thoughts

Rumors circulate that there'll be a way to unlock exclusive DLC characters by connecting the 3DS and the Wii U systems. I say 'nah'. The point of giving the Wii U and 3DS versions of Smash Bros the exact identical roster is so you can just buy one and that's all you need for the full character experience. It's the same as people saying Amiibos would be for DLC, like you need the Ridley Amiibo when you want to play as Ridley. It's dumb - that's just not what those features are for. MAYBE this system-link method could be ONE way to unlock DLC, but not as an alternative to just putting out an eshop and charging you for it.

Another thought - we're getting the Duck Hunt trailer today of course. Maybe we'll get Bowser Jr. announced too. But I don't think we're getting any announcements for DLC characters until both those characters are announced. I expect something like Mario Kart 8 where there are no DLC hints until it's suddenly announced at least a month or two after release of Smash Bros Wii U in all countries. I definitely thinking we're getting SOME DLC though, probably between two and four characters and at least one stage for each version, maybe some more costumes as well.
