Strange Meetings
Lucius did not like being around people. Mostly because, in his life, people expected things of him which he either could not deliver, or could only after a vast amount of turmoil and pain. Really, in a perfect world Lucius never left the haven of Malfoy Manor- with Narcissa it had become a place of dreams, rather than nightmares- and no-one ever expected anything of him again. Alas, the world he lived in was far from perfect.
Which was why he found himself stepping out to meet Walden McNair, of all people, for lunch. Not only was McNair a Ministry executioner, but Lucius had seen the kind of violence he reveled in when behind a Death Eater’s mask, and that delight gave him chills. How such a man could be so charismatic in public, and so violent in private, was beyond him. How he’d ended up with someone as pretty and sweet as Daisy Hookum was equally baffling. Lucius had met her at Malcolm’s wedding and been surprised but delighted by their ease of conversation, how unpretentious she was. Perhaps it was an American thing?
“McNair,” he greeted, public mask of the neutral, forgettable pureblood heir firmly in place as he finally found their table at the chosen restaurant. “It’s good to see you again.” No, it really wasn’t. “How has Daisy been?” A genuine question, considering her fiance’s arrest a month ago must have been quite the harrowing affair.
