Untitled (smoking buckets), 2018. . Not sure what I was doing or what it means. (if anything) Much of the process for me is going with my gut or acting on a whim even if it doesn’t make any sense at the time and having a look at what I made later. Deep Purple és un dels grans grups de rock que tots coneixem, o que hauríem de conèixer. Si més no, ens sona per un dels seus temes més emblemàtics, Smoke on the Water.

Ens situem al 4 de desembre de 1971, al Casino de Montreaux, Suïssa. Deep Purple anava a grabar un disc al Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, equip alquilat a aquest grup. Habent acabat de grabar, durant la nit el grup Frank Zappa and Mothers of Invention va tocar al teatre del casino.

Durant aquell fatídic concert, “some stupid with a flare gun (un estúpid amb una pistola de bengales) burned the place to the ground (va cremar el lloc de dalt a baix)”, cremant tots els instruments de Deep Purple i el Rolling Stones Mobile Studio conjuntament amb tot el Casino de Montreaux. Deep Purple va rendir homenatge a aquest fet amb frases dins el tema i amb el propi títol, Smoke on the Water (fum a l’aigua), ja que el fum es va escampar durant moltes hores per sobre del Llac Geneva, proper al lloc de l’incendi. 

Aquesta cançó va néixer d’una situació molt memorable (lamentablement) pel grup. Però cal destacar que el disc que estaven grabant i que es van veure obligats a acabar en un altre poble dels voltants era Machine Head, que sortiria al 1972 i es convertiria en un dels majors èxits de Deep Purple.
