Scott doesn’t even make it to the edge of his hiding place before scrambling back as shoes sprint past him. He cowers away into pitch darkness, among the cobwebs and forgotten papers, trying to calm his breathing down. Pray that he doesn’t have a heart attack now of all times.
Being a shifter has its perks and downfalls. He can escape Vince if he shrinks down and ducks into the walls. He can make Eggs rethink a prank by growing several feet. That comes with scaring Jeremy enough the stuttering guard can’t say a single word. Or another guard spots him shrunk and snatches him up.
It’s rare for Scott to actually shift. He hasn’t even truly escaped Vince for a while, now. He’s too old for it. It always seems the risk out way the benefits.
That’s why he’s a bit terrified at the fact he shrunk as he walked into David’s restaurant for routine inspection. Took five steps in, past the gate, and ended up staring at the platform the register sits on a hundred feet above him. He wasn’t allowed a moment to panic about not being able to grow back right away, not with a family walking in right behind him. There was only enough time to get to safety.
But now he’s stuck in the middle of a children’s entertainment center, unable to do anything but watch. Too afraid to go anywhere near where thundering footsteps could turn him into a bloody smear. Or if he’s lucky, get seen by a child who mistakes him for a toy.
Scott shakily runs a hand down his face. He needs to think.
THE HOLY TRINITY OF VIRTUEMOIR: the father. the son. the holy spirit
Let’s Go Fly a Kite
Scott's been looking up at the sky for even longer than he can remember. He can remember before Johnny and the days before Virg or even Gordon came into his life but before there were little brothers, there was always the sky. Dad tells him stories and Scott’s gonna be just like him one day.
One day he’s gonna shoot like a rocket through the massive clouds overhead. When he’s as tall as dad he’ll be up there too where the sun shines and the skies are always blue.
Except they’re not as blue as they were ten minutes ago. Scott looks up and up and his eyebrows go up and up ‘til they can’t go up any higher ‘cause it doesn’t look as nice as it did earlier in the morning.
He goes to call the little co-pilot of the kite he’s holding tight. Dad said Virg could stay with him and help with the launch if they were real careful...but Scott’s not careful enough. He’s so busy staring at the sky as always that he forgets to check where he’s running and suddenly one of the worst noises Scott’s ever heard rents the weirdly still air.
It’s a loud kinda cracking noise Scott’s not heard before but somehow he still knows what it is even as his foot goes through rotten wood and the rest of him follows it like a brick.
“Virgil!” He yelps as he falls and falls, scrabbling desperately for a hold but he can’t seem to grab onto nothing in the darkness. There’s nothing but empty air ‘til all of a sudden there’s not and Scott comes to a stop with a mighty thunk that knocks all the breath out his body. It’s replaced with pain, sharp and instantaneous, mostly in his hands which landed first before the rest of him followed. His head hurts too and his knees but Scott ignores all that.
“Virg!” He yells up at the circle of light that feels miles and miles above his head but can only be metres really. His words echo round and round, making his head ring something awful but he’s gotta warn his little brother. “Virg, stay back! Don’t go near the edge, bud!”
Jeff crouched down so that he could see the tiny bundle resting in his arms, "Look Scott, this is your new baby brother. His name is John. John Glenn Tracy. Would you like to hold him?"
Scott’s been waiting for this moment forever and ever and ever. Ever since daddy dropped him off at Gramma’s he’s been asking and bugging to meet baby brother.
Baby brother’s finally here and Scott’s so excited he can hardly breathe as daddy crouches down with the blanket Scott helped to pick out for his new brother. There’s a baby in it, the tiniest baby Scott’s ever seen and he marvels at the teeny tiny little nails and tufts of red hair. He’s like a potato!
“Hey, Johnny.” Scott greets him for the first time. He’s gonna take such good care of this little guy and he’s gonna be the bestest big brother Johnny could ever ask for.
He’s sat on a chair near momma’s bed and opens his arms up eagerly to be allowed to hold the blankets. Daddy settles the bundle in his arms, all warm and heavier than Scott was expecting the tiny potato baby to be.
“Hey.” Scott smiles so brightly as he holds Johnny all careful and safe. Tiny eyes crack open and it’s like Johnny’s whole face cracks open too. The most unholy wail Scott’s ever heard erupts from his mouth and those little eyes screw up as Johnny screeches and the noise makes Scott want to cry too.
“S’wrong, Johnny?” Scott tries to jiggle him but that only makes the noise worse. “Don’ cry, s’okay, Johnny. Shush.” All big brother wants is to soothe him but Johnny cries and cries and Scott’s crying too by the time daddy takes him away again.
“He hates me!” Scott cries miserably.
