What do you think is namora's reputation among atlanteans? we know the ketos' hatred of namor were what drew the smolts to him, what abt namora? does any group hate her and exclusively her? this is totally not my attempt to figure out which new subculture to create

I think that Namora was not a huge presence in the daily lives of Atlanteans, she was never in line for the throne because there were other male heirs so she did not have to face the same kind of racism/scrutiny Namor faced because as other Atlanteans saw her, she wasn’t a threat to becoming the ruler. Also Namora moved to Atlantis with her father (her father was atlantean and her mother was human) when she was like a teen or child, and depending on which canon you go by she at first had normal blue skin in her childhood which left her less likely to be prosecuted for being different. 

Namora lived in and out of Atlantis during her childhood and went on to the surface for adventures and joining Agents of Atlas, and when she married her husband Talan and had Nita (by way of science bc she was infertile) they moved to the city of Maritanis where she was poisoned by Llyra and was in a coma (believed to be dead at the time) for like 50 or more years.

So I feel like she was mostly on the outside of the Atlantean family, the Smolts would probably later end up calling her the “sleeping lady” and anytime one of their own fell ill/into a coma/passed in their sleep they were say she was with the sleeping lady of Atlantis now and she would guide them to whatever afterlife they believed in. They probably regard her coming back to life as a miracle later on though. Of course you can make up anything you want, that’s just my take on it!

TIS IS ME, SUBCULTURE ANON. I drew The Smolts. I took some more pictures of them closer up but for some reason Tumblr only lets me submit one picture at a time. So, uh, just tell me if there are some parts you want a more “up close” photo for.

So yeah, these disaster teens with aesthetic are the Smolts and Minnows. I had a ton of fun drawing them and writing out the details. I’m thinking of doing a spread on the Betty Deans or the Ketos next. Any thoughts?

I love it! There’s so many details but I laughed out loud when I zoomed in and saw “A Wild Loa Appears!” For anyone who wants the Saga of the Smolts here’s the link! I love the minnows, little punks! I really like the design of the ragged clothes the best.

As for the Betty Deans, I think they would be in the same style like that, ripped up or mended clothes but with like their signature blue color which would compliment their blue skin and maybe even make them blend in more with their ocean surroundings which is great for sneaky surprise attack pranks against the Ketos!

Last thing before I go to sleep. If Namor has kids, they'd get SPIRITUALLY ADOPTED by the smolts and BDs. the kiddos would try to disguise themselves to join the groups and it becomes a secret that everybody knows but nobody mentions. DRAMA TIME. one of the kids gets attacked(bc questions of legitimancy and hatred against Namor sometimes bleeds down to his kids) and when all their guards get paid off/incapacitated, it's the untrained shitposty teens that risk their lives to protect them

The Smolts/Betty Deans are the unofficial god parents/cousins/family of Namor’s kids and they know how to break kneecaps and put the fear of Neptune into anyone who messes with the royal prince/princess(s)!

Whenever one of Namor’s kids scream they hate their parents and are going to run away from home forever! They usually just end up running to the Smolts/Betty Deans because that’s a safe place for them and they all let them hang around for a few days and pepper in some talk and basically tell the kiddos that even though the parents might be rough on them for not having their own pet kraken its usually for a good reason.

And I bet the smolt’s unofficial color is namor’s-swim-trunks green. And that their trend of fetching human clothes from shipwrecks cane from when their originators were to poor or “lowly” to be supplied proper clothes

Those are great headcanons! I would love it even more if the trend of stealing clothes came straight from freaking Namor himself who in canon has knocked over stores, taken clothes off homeless people, and dug through trash (even teaching Nita), to take clothes since he never wears any himself.

I love the suggestion! more hcs now! You know the Karen meme? In Atlantis teens refer to a Karen as a "Keto". A Keto passive aggressively hates Namor and think the Smolts are the spawn of Set. and that interaction with the surface causes autism. And they drink shipwreak-wood-seafoam-smancy-sand smoothies. And when Atlantis is falling, they are demanding to speak to the manager

Anon I love you. Also the Smolts all act very tough and bad ass but they have good hearts, like they are the punks of their generation, listening to loud music, (the top Sea Punk band is probably called the Sirens or something) but ready to punch a racist/nazi (some atlanteans liked Meranno’s ideas of joining the Nazis) in the face. They help kids who need help and fight bullies constantly. The act like bodyguards for kids who are bullied and teach them how to fight. They have a mini following of like 5-8 year olds who call themselves Minnows and try to copy them but like on a kiddie level. 

The Smolts actually have an ongoing rivalry with not just one Keto but a whole group of them, they are the older generation who thought Emperor Thakorr was the bee’s knees and keep talking about how “pure Atlantean blood” is meaningful and important while looking down their noses at anyone who doesn’t fit into their conservative world view. They keep calling Namor “That Bastard” and talk about how Princess Fen should never have lowered herself to sleep with surface scum. These were the people who loved it when Thakorr humiliated Namor in court.

Every month during the Citizen’s Court sessions that Namor holds to pass judgement on stuff that wasn’t settled in the lower courts and need his royal attention, as sure as the tides there’s a group of Ketos lining up to bitch about how their homes/personal property were vandalized and accusing the Smolts who have come to so many court sessions they know all the guards by name and Namor has to compose his face into a strict Kingly look but he is barely holding back his malicious glee and you can see his lips twitch from trying to stop his smiles. 

He knows all the Smolts’s names, and knows which ones are orphans from losing their parents and he has them on the list he keeps that provides them with food or housing as they need it. Atlantis has a few orphanages and foster places to help kids who lost their parents that Namor pays for.

The Smolts at first were wary of Namor, since he is the King, when they went to court the first few times but they soon saw that he was pretty chill and usually turned his anger on the Ketos for wasting his time with childish squabbles. 

Now the Smolts basically treat Court days as a way to count their accomplishments of pissing off the Ketos. The guards have running bets on which Smolt pissed off the top Keto (karen) that month who acts like the leader for the other Ketos.

A Betty Dean and a Smolt marry and both groups' aesthetics get combined to create something beautiful. Namor drops by and everyone freaks out(in a good way)

Namor brings them bagels, which are soggy and wet from being underwater but they love it anyways because they never had a bagel before and thus it becomes tradition for there to be bagels at wedding/bonding ceremonies in their groups, and usually there’s a dare/bet that someone loses and they have to be the ones to take the potion/serum that lets them breath air and go up to the surface on a bagel run, they have to deal with stupid human money too.

man, your response time is fast! sorry if you're fatigued or anything. the smolts and betty deans have no gender restrictions bc they suck. and they have the FAKEST RIVALRY EVER. like the most serious conflict was about which group started first. on slow days of namor's citizen's court, they flood in and file a pretend conflict of each stealing the other's SUPER SECRET DANCE ROUTINE and end up preforming them like the jets and sharks from west side story. they like making their king smile.

HAHA! omggg I love it because then they get to derail the rest of the court day which honestly is super boring for Namor because its the same old people in there every month bitching about their neighbors, the really sensitive cases that are actually important are treated with respect but others are just like “how can we distract everyone in court and make the Ketos super pissed that nothing is being held to the strictness of Thakorrs court” because Ketos love to show up on court days even when they aren’t complaining since they are the nosiest busybodies in all of Atlantis.

Also yeah, Betty Deans and Smolts are made up of any gender/however you want to identify people, honestly I always headcanons that Atlanteans have a much better response/attitudes towards anyone of any gender and sexual preference like, no one is going to hate you if you are lgbt.

Now for a Betty Deans history ramble! The name came from when some atlanteans decided to explore the surface to look for Namor after he disappeared and got in trouble and got rescued by Betty Dean herself, who has experience looking after atlanteans. They went back and told their kids about the lady who rescued them and when those kids were forming their own gang, they were fighting over their name(they almost could've been called "the suffering shads"), until one was like, "the Betty Deans!"

I love it. While most Smolts wear green for Namor, maybe the Betty Deans wear blue hats/caps they make themselves with silver stars sewn on them because Betty was a police officer, they didn’t know what a police officer was. They imitated her “hands on her hips while they bitch out people” signature move and often tossed in surface slang. When Betty grew old and took on Nita, she told her about the Smolts and Nita carried that back to Atlantis and met them for the first time and the older Betty Deans ask about Betty and Nita tells them that she is a good woman still and misses them and later when they find out about Betty dying the Betty Deans and Smolts honor her in a Atlantean ceremony where they call on Neptune and Cleito to watch over her which they would never do for a surface woman.
