Week 3

I’ve been so exhausted but so happy over the past week and a half it’s not even funny. But I’m really really happy here. Next week I start finnish courses, and this week I’ve started choir, theatre and maybe even being an NSO for the Helsinki Roller Derby!! I’m so stoked for all these opportunities. The friends I’m making are absolutely amazing, including the kids who came with AFS from the US. I’m really happy to be here with all of them and start getting to know kids from my school and such. This last weekend we had orientation camp somewhere in Espoo. We played games and ran around and ate such good food. It was amazing. I went to sauna for the first time since coming here which was really cool. We’d go into the sauna and then jump into the ocean over and over and it was so much fun. :) I also made a ton of amazing friends who I’ll get to hang out with in Helsinki and such. Really exciting stuff. :) My birthday is next week and I actually have people coming which is really exciting! I was worried it would be no fun because I wouldn’t know people but now I think it will be great.

I suck at posting, so I apologize.

I’ve almost finished my second full week here in Finland. It’s been such an amazing experience so far and I’m really excited to be staying here for a year. My host family is absolutely wonderful. This last Saturday and Sunday we went on a Viking Cruise to Sweden and back (without getting off the boat) that was so cool. The kids had a blast and we took lots of goofy pictures. They all wanted to try on my glasses which was very funny. Aada and I played last Friday on the trampoline together, Venla and I danced around the cabin on the cruise and Aatu and I went to dinner at a buffet after he showed me around the ship, running after things that looked fun and playing air hockey. I really think I’m getting closer to them and it’s really nice. Sari and I often have good conversations about politics and such. I’m having a grand time. I have made a couple friends which is amazing. Quite a few of them live in my neighborhood and/or were past exchange students who know how hard it can be moving to a different country. I’m having a birthday party on the 18th of September to celebrate my adultness and some of the girls and I are going to go to the bars and clubs that night. Very exciting. I’ve already bought a couple cases of Cider for the occasion. I’m really excited! I’ve gone shopping twice with Jenna, one of the girls I’ve met at the school and we went to Helsinki to wander around. It was phenomenal. I’m often really tired and need to sleep a lot. Finnish is coming along really slowly. I think the biggest thing throwing me off is the slang. Some of the language rules aren’t even known by Finnish people lol. I will share more later!
