Hey, so I know you and your followers are good at finding obscuoh re media so maybe you'll know. Back when I was in early college (around 2009) I read a comic about a trans girl who's namr was either alex or that was their deadname, cant recall, but it was balck and white, the first few chapters were like clearly older bad art and at one point she was in a play and someone tried to kill her.

Hm. Nothing that fits all of the details springs to mind, though if you’re getting a couple of different characters’ storylines mixed up in your recollection you might possibly be thinking of Khaos Comics. If that’s not it, someone else reading this might have an idea!

(It may help narrow things down if you can pin down a genre or milieu – i.e., was this fantasy, sci-fi, contemporary, etc.? School/workplace drama? Did it have wizards in it? That sort of thing.)

cringes bc coding isnt ALWAYS done in good faith. see: the makaras and meenah being black coded while feferi doesnt drop a single thing that makes her seem that way despite her genetics being shared largely with meenah. and hussie having a SOUR history with his respect for the black community and making all of the villains have light AAVE in their regular dialogue. like. coding can be "not on purpose" because they realize its a bad look if it was, and theyre in denial.

This is a good point!! I was focusing inherently on how the fandom has been using the word “coding” in regards to June and Roxy and their coding - which isn’t coding so much as reading - so I was completely forgetting the other spectrum of things where coding is done legitimately but negatively.

The way Hussie wrote the Makaras and Meenah is coding. They are inherently written as anti-black stereotypes, and posited as villains in most situations as a result (or just do outright immoral things). Suspect that Feferi, the good girl of the bunch, is completely excluded from this; I’d say that’s how you can tell it’s intentional. Feferi came first. There was no need to make Meenah - and by extension HIC - black coded considering that Feferi isn’t. But they do, strangely, and again bring pedophilia into the black coded character’s arc alongside the fascism, genocide, and race divison.

Hussie’s admittedly very good at coding characters when it comes to negative stereotypes or traits, but awful at coding when it comes to genuine and positive representation. Which admittedly makes me very tired, because now I’m not sure that I actually want to trust Hussie and his team with coding characters and keeping them good, positive reps.

Okay so. I have a. Lot. But I'll go with one big headcanon I have.

I believe that Zim was purposely planted by the Control Brains so he could kill Tallest Miyuki. I believe this was because she handled being the Tallest so well, and was too peaceful for their liking. Tallest Miyuki wasn't a dumbass who could be easily controlled and manipulated into a puppet of war by the Control Brains, and they wanted to change that. Zim was created for the sole purpose of getting rid of her, despite him not purposefully knowing this. I believe he was able to go on for so long being so defective because the Control Brains Knew, and they Needed Him to be so defective. He was a scientist because They KNEW he would end up working in a lab with a dangerous thing when Miyuki was there. They KNEW it would get out and that she would die in the process. They also knew the blame for this would be put on the Vortian scientists, which would break one of the peaceful alliances.

Zim is very dangerous for the entire Irken empire, and could easily cause the entire thing to collapse by complete accident. He was created to be dangerous. He wasn't created to be a scientist, or an invader, or anything like that. He was created to destroy the empire, or at the very least make it so that the empire is EXTREMELY easy for the Control Brains to manipulate and control.
