I was at brookfield the other day and their “Chicago garter snake” looks a whole lot like a plains garter snake. Can other reptile people corroborate?
When i see wild garters they usually have the chicago garter pattern (bars on the neck)
Plains garter snakes do live in illinois but chicago garter snakes are a subspecies of common garter snakes. They have slightly different faces and higher lateral lines, i think.
Plains: thamnophis radix
Common: thamnophis sirtalis

Snake expert Tumbler, I need your help. What kinda noodle is this? It's sunbathing in my backyard at the moment. I live in the South Eastern region of Virginia.
My uncle is convinced this is a cottonmouth despite my insistence that cottonmouths do not occur north of SE VA. Neither him nor I are herpers. This photo was taken in Lehigh Valley PA.
