“Oblong”
by Lewis Burnett (Australia).
“Photographing the bizarre and wonderful snake-necked turtle underwater had always been on my South-West diving wishlist. These fascinating reptiles are found in the freshwater bodies that scatter the region and are most commonly seen on land in the breeding season while they are searching for a mate. I found this particular individual on my first ever freshwater dive in the region and couldn’t have been happier to have such an obliging subject to photograph.”

“Last October, our Reptile Discovery Center team welcomed four snake-necked turtle hatchlings, the species’ first offspring at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in nine years. When they emerged from their shells between Oct. 13 and 20, they were the size of a quarter and weighed about 3 grams. All four could easily fit in the palm of my hand.”

What in the world is this? It’s the Roti Island snake-necked turtle, a creature from Indonesia that is so rare it’s critically endangered. Weird and wonderful, yes?
