Damn fine cocktail! A new friend of mine has told me that I’ve got the #cambodianfever so I thought I’d give it a try! In Episode 1 of snakesoup, I speak to artist Baha Görkem Yalim about a strange object he has possessed for the past 8 years: the glasses his grandfather was wearing when he was killed after the Turkish military coup in 1980. This leads us to the burden and blessing of owning powerful objects, the traps of storytelling, and surveillance. Also aliens! Give it a listen and tell me what you think.

About the artist: Baha Görkem Yalim is Turkish-born, Amsterdam-based artist mainly working with installation and film. After having worked as an engineer, he completed his BA in Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2015, receiving the GRA Award in the Thesis category. Yalim works across various mediums exploring themes surrounding history and objecthood, having a particular interest in the concept of the keepsake. He was recently nominated for the VISIO Young Talent Acquisition Prize of the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Italy, and has exhibited his work in many major Dutch art spaces, including Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (SMBA), EYE Film Institute, Oude Kerk, Castrum Peregrini, and the Hermitage Museum. www.bahagorkemyalim.com
