Causing A Raucous
So we almost got kicked out of chemo. Just kidding. But almost. :)
Mom and I must have made an impression on the Oncology Department during my first chemo treatment because when it came to round two, I got my own little suite. Or...maybe it was my frequent trips to the bathroom and they wanted to cut down on the foot traffic (this new space had its own private toilet). But whatever the reason, my good friend Maggie and I took full advantage of the more enclosed space. The room came equipped with a hospital bed, rather than the recliner, and after “work talk” and a stab or two at Madlibs, Maggie climbed onto the bed with me to play around with Snapchat. This is where we got a little out of control. (I sincerely apologize for the lady in the recliner across from us, since she was trying to nap it up while we laughed and carried on.) We were laughing so hard at one point that a separate nurse from down the hall came in to check what was happening (and to turn off a completed medication that kept beeping). I wish I could upload the video that really got us going (my face was distorted and I had a goatee) but I can’t figure out that technology at the moment.
Nurse Angela came in a few minutes later and mellowed things out by giving me some Benadryl before administering the Taxol. We both went about our separate tasks - Maggie reading while I rested.
Before long I got to feeling a bit wheezy and tight in the chest. With only minutes left on the Taxol, Maggie flagged down Angela who listened to my chest and took vitals. Although everything appeared clear and normal I was still feeling uncomfortable so Angela pushed some more Benadryl and a steroid. I immediately felt high and drugged. I preferred the wheezy chest to the drugs and asked Angela not to give me the last dose of steroids. The team watched me for 30 minutes before again listening to my chest and checking vitals.
After 6 hours on the oncology floor I was told it was time to leave. Although I was skeptical, I was invited back for round three.
