It was pitch black in the apartment building. Power blackouts occurred far too often in this building and most of its residents had learned over the years to remain in their apartment and simply wait for the power to return. because it had always return, sooner or later.
After being caught by the blackout in the middle of the process of making a late dinner, Ismael had ventured out to hunt for food and was now making his way up the stairs. Takeaway food in one hand and a small flashlight in another. He rounded the corner of the stairs and found, much to his surprise, that someone on his floor was out of their apartment. He greeted the young woman silently with a quick nod and took a few steps passed her to reach his door.
❛ I met the landlady on my way in. ❜ he began, glancing back at the young woman while he fumbled for the keys in his pocket. ❛ she promised that power will be back in a few hours. ❜ Ismael unlocked his door as he spoke. Key in, a swift turn. Click! –and it was done. His hand was on the handle and with a slight push and a few steps he could be inside, free from the concerns of others, from their pain and suffering. She was lurking around almost lifelessly. Once you've been around for so long, you barely take notice of the others around you.
