I’ve had this wip for months, and it’s from a fic that’s probably going to be called Poppycock Wishes. It’s a Dream is a Genie AU.
2023 @dreamlingbingo fill for square: C5 Chains
CW: enslavement I guess but in the genie sense?
“What do you want to do?”
“Me?” The Stranger’s brows shoot towards the heavens. “You are the ruby bearer, are you not?”
“Well, yeah, but I also accidentally kept you in a drawer for a good three years, so I would understand if you would rather not stay with me.” He stresses, guilt still shredding his insides. “And quite frankly, I have no desire for you to – to serve me. So, if there’s a preferable course of action here, then I implore you to speak it.”
The Stranger looks utterly confused, to the point where Hob gets the impression this has never happened before.
“I am not at liberty to have a preference.” The Stranger eventually says. “Do what you will with the ruby.”
Hob quirks a challenging brow and dangles the gem in question threateningly above the open drawer. “Really? Okay, I guess I’ll just put this away again until I figure out –“
“Do not,” The Stranger growls, bristling with a sudden ferocious intensity, “put me back in that wretched compartment.”
“Alright.” Hob concedes softly. “Good. So, you do have a preference. Cough it up then.”
The Stranger levels him with a truly lethal look - one that suggests Hob is asking him to break several rules right now. “The choice is yours. I am to remain impartial. However, perhaps I might remind you that I am bound to grant the wish of whoever possesses the ruby, be their intentions good or bad.”
“Which do you think I have?”
“I think you’re unaware of the power you currently hold.”
Hob huffs, tossing the ruby onto the bed. The Stranger’s eyes track it as it sails through the air and lands somewhere within the rumpled sheets. “Look, you’ve already granted me eternal life. It would be – well, it would be downright greedy for me to ask for anything more, wouldn’t it? If I built a life entirely from wishes alone, what would be the point of it all? It’s the path of a cheater.”
“Then pass the ruby on to another.” The Stranger says, bland.
“And if they wish for the world to burn?”
The Stranger meets his gaze to answer with painful simplicity. “Then the world, Hob Gadling, would burn.”
