Mikasa’s behavior in 138 was in character!
Before I begin, I would like to say that first, here be spoilers for snk 138, and second, this is purely based on the leaks and not the actual translation.
Okay so when I first read the leaks, I couldn’t wrap my head around the way the EM storyline was concluded. I thought it was a poor attempt at recreating GoT ending but now that I think about it, it makes sense.
Mikasa has always put Eren first. She loved him unconditionally despite his attempts at pushing her away and even when he started the rumbling, she still opposed killing him. She was in the ‘denial’ phase of grief for so long that the other 4 stages sort of came crashing down on her in one go and she found herself between a rock and a hard place. Simply put, there wasn’t enough time for her (or anyone for that matter) to actually process everything that happened.
And now, just when she thinks the battle is over, whatever left of her friends and people who survived the rumbling turned into mindless titans because of the man she loves (more or less; we still don’t know if Eren is being controlled or not).
Add all of these together (plus the guilt of Sasha’s death and the death of the innocent people in Liberio) and you’ll get yourself a recipe for mental breakdown which could explain why she had that ‘vision’ or ‘hallucination’ or whatever you wanna call it.
We see her finally progressing to the ‘acceptance’ stage of grief but even so, I feel like she still refuses to put the blame on Eren.
And I say this because, again, to me, it looks like she’s also blaming herself for the way things turned? She truly believed that she could have changed Eren’s mind had she confessed her love and that everything would have turned differently. The irony is that things would have been the same. The only exception is that she and Eren would get their happy ending while the rest of the people on Paradis suffered. it’s heartbreaking and selfish and so incredibly in character for her.
Mikasa’s world is Eren and Eren alone. I truly believed that she had finally cut herself away from this mindset but apparently I was wrong.
But yeah, it’s clear that she concocted this whole dream to sort of cope with the fact that Eren has to die and she has to be the one who kills him. To somehow convince herself that it’s the only option left.
And.. I thought it was a straightforward conclusion to her story? But apparently some are interpreting this differently?
I’m seeing people saying that the vision was Eren’s and not hers. That doesn’t make sense to me?
First of all, we know that the Ackermans can’t be influenced by the FT mind control so there’s no way he’s projecting this in her head. Second, it’s clearly not a dream that Eren sent to her from the past(?) because Eren would never, ever leave everyone and everything behind and run away with her. That’s the opposite of what he is.
In fact, the reason why he started working with Yelena and the others was because he got sick and tired of the MP’s lack of action. There’s just no way that this dream was from his point of view.
Eren was never a selfish person but we all know that Mikasa is. You want to tell me that after facing off against Levi to save Armin, after everything he did to keep Historia safe, after that ‘you’re all precious to me’ scene, he’d willingly leave his friends behind to live in a hut with Mikasa while the world burned around them? 🤯🤯🤯
I’m sorry, but no. Just no. And if that was the case and the direction Isayama is taking, then god.. I don’t even know what to say.
I do believe that at one point, the real Eren inserted himself into the dream (specifically when the scarf thing was brought up) and that he put an end to it by telling her to throw the scarf away and move on. This could explain the sudden appearance of the titan marks and the way it connects with chapter 1’s ‘see you later Eren’.
But regardless, whether I’m satisfied or not with the resolution of Eren and Mikasa’s story is irrelevant. It is what it is. The only story left is that of Eren. I guess we’ll find out soon.
