Snow Bus - July 2023 I refuse to call this a snow-cat because it has wheels, not treads. This monster of a bus with six independent electric-motor-powered wheels is necessary, not to drive on the glacier, but rather to get there. As the glacier has receded, it has left a huge border of glacial moraine, which is basically rocks and gravel that was carried along by the glacier. The edge of the moraine, shown in image two, has a 34 degree hill on it. There is a bus at the top of the hill in the image. These monster buses are rated for 36 degrees, so the driver stops at the bottom (or top) of the hill and engages all wheel-drive before going up or down the hill. Only eleven of these behemoths were ever made. Ten are at the Columbia Ice Field, the other was sent to the Arctic for a while and then retired to a museum. MWM
