♡ A/N : im a little bit shy to post this because i rarely formally self-insert into anything but i've been very captivated by one piece and i've been thinking about this nonstop so here is a general lore post for my current op self-insert
spoilers up to the end of fish-man island up ahead.

Age: 23 Pre Timeskip, 25 Post Timeskip
Race: Half-Fishmen + Half Mermaid (Betafish)
Bastard child of Arlong, Jinbei's niece and adoptive daughter. Her mother was a close companion of Madame Shyarly, through whom she met Arlong.
Kept her existence a secret due to differing political beliefs and fear of Arlong's violent nature.
Her mother passes trying to protect her from traffickers and ultimately fails. She's mixed with Fishmen but generally presents as a purple beta fish mermaid which makes her a target. She gets trafficked into sex work shortly after while very young.
She spends ages 8 through 13 working as a prostitute before Jinbei and the Fishmen Pirates liberate from her captors.
In this time, she unlocks her Conquerors Haki while fighting off a violent client. The thick scar around her neck is from the same encounter.
Arlong learns of her existence through a letter from Jinbei, but is already in captivity.
The year she spends with Jinbei and the Fishmen Pirates, she describes, as the happiest year of her entire life.
Following Jinbei's acceptance of the deal to become the Seven Warlords, he entrusts her to Royal Family to train to become a part of their army.
However, the subsequent release of Arlong makes this short-lived. Upon his release from Impel Down, he kidnaps her and brings her with him to Cocoyasi - to which she spends the next eight years captive alongside him
Arlong continues to train her during the time and makes her a formidable foe, but she's still heavily monitored and held captive. Her circumstances only intensify Arlong's hatred for human beings, and they often get into arguments about Arlong's cruelty towards the species.
Most of all, she spends eight years deeply resenting Arlong for continuing her life of captivity.
She slowly loses her drive to leave the island, due to the uncertainty of Jinbei's status and grows increasingly depressed over 8 years.
When the Strawhats come to Cocoyasi and liberate it's people, she finds her motive again and begs to temporarily join the crew. She does not specify who she is looking for, only that she does not intend to stay forever and will not place extra burden on them.
She stays with them during that duration, getting separated from the crew during the events of Sababody. Shortly after the events of Marineford takes place, she makes it her mission to return to Fishman Island, desperately searching for Jinbei until finding him in the Sea Forest.
She remains with Jinbei for those two years. She trains her Haki alongside him while he waits for Luffy. Notably, she does not reunite with the crew in Sababody, but does train herself to be stronger with them in mind.
When the Strawhats eventually return, she has no plans of re-joining the crew. To her the allyship was always temporary. She's surprised when Luffy extends the invite, and almost turns it down until Jinbei also reveals his plans to join them, to which she decides to continue to travel at sea with the Strawhats
ABILITIES / OTHER INFO.
She mainly fights with Haki but owns a staff that she fights with. Her fighting style is inspired by a rural Bangladeshi martial arts that involved wooden staff. She also likes spears, and owns a talwar—single edge blade.
She trains her Conqueror's Haki during her two-years with Jinbei.
Her main source of catharsis is writing. She journals for personal reasons but also takes care to document the adventures of the Strawhats in secret. She keeps this well-hidden and the crew don't find out for some time.
Aside from that, she also reads a whole lot of war and combat strategy as part of her contribution and keeps the most up-to-date with global politics
She's a great cook and does best with seafood dishes.
She dyes parts of her hair in an attempt to look more related to Jinbei which is why she chooses blue. Most of her piercings and tattoos she got during her time at Cocoyasi as a way to give her control. She also starts using substances in this time, mostly weed. Doesn't like drinking.
Her genetics have mutated in a way that makes her more traditionally mermaid like, able to switch between legs and tail through the submersion of water. She is a worse fighter on land which she has to actively train against and struggles with even lightly injured.
She has a strained relationship with Nami that smooths out after the timeskip where they become close and is very close with Robin, with whom she likes to trade books and information with.
On land, she likes to dress for comfort and prefers baggy clothes. On the ship, she often wears saree with a fabric made from seaweed and loose draping for comfort. She also wears this underwater.
Her main drive as a character is to live as freely as possible, after spending most of her life in complete captivity. This makes her something of a hedonist and somewhat lazy and cautious. She is formidable fighter but not out of discipline or a desire to excel but as a way to support her curiosity and desire to learn and see the world.
That being said, she is extremely stubborn about wanting to laze about which gets her pretty far. Her stubbornness to live exactly the way she wants is also the source of her Haki and a crucial element to her tactical choices to survive through the series. She's also motivated by wanting to stay alongside Jinbei for as much of her life as she can.
A part of her maturation is developing a will for hard-work during the timeskip

i don't know who i'll ship with her yet, it's between zoro and luffy - though im currently leaning towards zoro. she's older than both of them which makes it complicated but we ball. a poly selfship is in the distance but figuring out the narraative logistics are a literal nightmare.
