In 1885, a self-educated farmer from Vermont named Wilson Bentley became the first person to photograph a snowflake. Later he wrote, “Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated. When a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost.” He died on this day in 1931 from pneumonia contracted after walking home in a snowstorm.
