TW for character death. Though those who know this series know that thats not the worst that happens in this series 😅
Lyra was the last, unexpected pup of the head elder, Lacerta. One day, as she was learning how to fly, she found an abandoned and pale pup who called himself Rome. He had survived on his own for so long that he cared little for the rules, and at forst tried to drive Lyra away. But when the girl convinced her mother and the other elders to take him in their colony, he believed to be indebted to her. And that, along with the love he quickly developed for her, is why he chooses to risk being caught in the daylight to fetch Lyra flower, leaves, herbs, whatever she could want from Nocturnas flora.
Lyra had always been fascinated with herbs and medicine. If she were human, she would cultivate her own garden. She doesn't know as much as Zephyr, but she will happily offer her aide to any injured member of the colony. She often heals her best friend Rome, as he will rummage through thorny bushes and fly through branches to collect whatever he thinks will please her.
They wasted no time at all when they both were old enough to take each other as mates. They only had eyes for each other. And in the late summer of that year, they had their first pup. A boy who had inherited his mothers' darker fur they named Cosmos, after the lovely summer flower Rome delivered to Lyra. Rome refused to part from his mate and son like all the other males, and stayed with them both through all four seasons. He taught Cosmos the best ways to forage, should he ever find himself alone "I pray to Nocturna that will never happen. But learning a few life skills wouldn't hurt." And Lyra taught him everything she knew of medicine and herbology. Rome protected them both as they made Cosmos' first migration, and he kept them both wrapped in his wings to ensure their warmth.
Their happiness couldn't last forever, though. In the following spring, Cosmos was roosting with his mother as they both awaited for Rome's return, just like always. This time, Lyra had requested he bring her back certain leaves, though she was certain that it shouldn't have taken her mate long to find. Were she not pregnant with their second pup she would have flown out to search for him, but all she could do was hold her son to soothe them both...
A few hours later, owls deposited Romes corpse at the hollow trees entrance, declaring that the lawbreaker had paid for his crimes.
Lyra was never the same after the loss of her mate. She tried so hard to hang on for her family, only eating for the baby inside her and barely flying. She promised Cosmos, a young adult by now, that she would stay for as long as possible. But with her weakened, broken heart, she died after giving birth to his little sister, "Cos... Mos... Snowdrop... I'm sorry...." Lacerta found Cosmos sobbing as he held his newborn sister beside their mothers' corpse.
Cosmos was supposed to be searching for his own mate by now, but with his grandmother being far too worn and old to care for his sister, he chose to raise the little pup as if she were his own with all the lessons their parents taught him. He named his sister Snowdrop, after their mothers' last words, he flew her out into the forest and convinced various beast mothers to let his sister feed until she was weaned, and he kept Snowdrop sheltered from the dangers of their world while telling her all the stories of their parents that he knew.
... At least he would, if Snowdrop wasn't so easily distracted by her curiosity and imagination. Snowdrop was full of hope and wished to see the world in a welcoming light, unlike her cautious brother. After all, if their goddess Nocturna created all life and promised them all sunlight, the world couldn't be so bad, right? She knew to avoid the day and owls, but surely there was more to life than hiding in the dark?
She wasn't sure what to think of the humans. Until one night, while practicing her hunting before her first migration, the young bat was caught by a group of researchers. Of course, she didn't know her colony was being studied. Only that she was suddenly banded and let go. She flew back to Cosmos straight away, who decided the humans were the last straw. First the owls, niw humans wish to take away what remains of his family!? "If I see those humans, I'll bite their eyes out!" He proclaimed, though the elders stopped him from flying into a rage.
Ever since then, though, Snowdrop was believed to be cursed. Not to death like the Brightwings believe, but her colony believes the bands mean an omen of bad luck. It was Lacerta that ensured her grand children still had a place in the colony, but she couldn't control how the other silverwings avoided Snowdrop, and Cosmos since he refused to leave her side, like the plague. And so, the siblings were isolated and only had each other during Snowdrops' first hibernation.
Fast forward one year later, when the events of the book and show take place. Snowdrop is now a fully grown bat, and longs to find a mate. But how is that possible when no one wants anything to do with her? Cosmos tries his best to comfort her and stick by her, but she knows he has fallen for another in the colony, one of the few bats who still treated them like normal despite her band. At his sisters' insistence, Cosmos has hesitantly begun courting the other male, but it has left her far more alone. But the time to migrate has come again. Who knows? Perhaps this winter will prove whether or not her band brings her bad, or good, luck.
~
And that is their story! At least before the events of the book. As we know, Shade set off a chain of events when he looked at the sun. And that terrible storm that blew Shade away from his colony couldn't have affected only him 👀
But thats for another day. Lets get into what they look like! Of course, in the book universe, they both look like regular bats. With Snowdrop having lighter fur. But in the cartoon universe, they get to look more ✨️stylized✨️
For Cosmos, he inherited Lyra's deeper colors. Cosmos is an indigo blue, kind of like Chinook. But his neck fur and Mohawk are a warm wine, similar to Todds' mom. He has golden colored eyes, and due to focusing on his sister and struggling with his own mental health, his hair is longer than the other males in the show and a bit tangled despite Snowdrops' best efforts. His voice claim is Haku from Spirited Away.
Personality wise; he used to be a happy bat, ready to fly off on another one of dads adventures. But after losing both parents in such a short amount of time and having to take his sister under his wing, he has grown outwardly cold and distrustful of what he isn't familiar with. He has taken the path of an observer, analyzing the tiniest of details before assessing what he must do or think, especially of new faces. He has successfully hunted so many tiger moths because of this. But don't be fooled; he can laugh and smile. He is still a big brother and teases Snowdrop, but only when he is fully relaxed and confident that she is safe. And the one he wishes to be mates with has succeeded in getting his fur to fluff bashfully. Cosmos is only cold as a way to protect himself and those he loves.
As for Snowdrop, she inherited Romes pale pallette. Her base fur is a pastel lilac, and her neck fur is a rose mauve. Though her hair, which woukd be long and wavy like Marinas, is an ivory color like Breezes mother (I'm assuming this background bat is Breezes mom). Her eyes are a spring green, and the band she possesses is silver. Her voice claim is Aurora from Sleeping Beauty.
Personality wise, Snowdrop is a dreamer. She's always got something on her mind, especially of her many curiosities. She may appear ditzy on the surface level, but she is an observer as well. She's hung by Cosmos' side and watched, nit insects flight patterns or other members of their colony, but the forest itself. She loves every story and fairy tale, and truly believes in the good of the world. Nocturna created even the predators of the world, are they evil? She's not a fool, she's not going to fly in front of an owl after how their father died. But she believes in Nocturnas promise. She welcomes new faces, and will give every soul she encountered a chance. She may sometimes annoy her brother for fun, as siblings do, but she truly loves and values him. He is her brother, father, and mother all at once, and all she wishes for is his happiness.
Neither of them are going to be prepared for the adventure I've got brewing for them, though.
(If you guys have any questions, I'd be so happy to answer! ^^)
Although albinism doesn't always cause blindness or vision problems, I'm deciding that Snowdrop does indeed have vision problems. Thats another reason why her brother is so protective of her and so worried about her making the migration alone.
Cosmos' crush is a male silverwing named Whisp. They were actually friends since they were pups, along with a few other bats that unfortunately drifted away when Cosmos took in Snowdrop and closed off after he lost his parents.
But Whisp stuck around. He helped pupsit for Cosmos while he hunted, and managed to convince his mother to help feed Snowdrop when she still needed milk. It was strange to both males, as their species do not typically care for the pups. It didn't come naturally for either of them. But they learned together, and it wasn't long before Cosmos fell in love.
Snowdrop knew before her first migration that Cosmos wanted to start a life with Whisp, but he was too afraid of what might happen to her. Animals with albinism and poor eyesight don't tend to last long in the wild, and he couldn't imagine losing the last of his family. Snowdrop hopes that with her second migration, it will finally show Cosmos that she's alright on her own, and he shouldn't hold his own life back anymore.
Snowdrop and Whisp get along well. She was the first to assure him that her brother did like him.
Pup Snowdrop: Don't worry. He likes your butt and fancy mane. I overheard him talking to himself about you.
Whisp: *fur ruffling in a flustered manner* He thinks its fancy?
