3rd Person pov
Steve was losing it in the van, as he and Eddie drove home. "I still think we should have bought something from the store, it's rude to show up somewhere without a little something..." He murmured under his breath, Eddie huffed and rolled his eyes in response.
"Dude, this is (y/n), I've known her since we were in diapers! And she told us not to buy anything, so we're not gonna bring something aside from our good company! And Robin," He joked, chuckling at his own bad joke. "Believe me, if (y/n) tells you to do something, or not to in this case, you listen to her, the consequences could be disastrous...." He said, putting on his Dungeon Master voice.
Steve shook his head, "First of all, I'm so telling Robin you said that. Second, I get that, but I still feel guilty. She might have just been being polite when she invited us over, we need to get something... Wine?" He asked Eddie.
Eddie shook his own head in response, "Nah, (y/n) doesn't drink, at least she's never had any interest in it."
Steve looked down, thinking, "Dessert?"
Eddie responded again, "Nah, (y/n) has the baking chops of... I don't know, someone who's good at baking..." He pondered, letting Steve grab the steering wheel and pull the van back in the lines of the road.
"Okay... Well, what about... Flowers?" Steve asked hesitantly, he didn't want to say too much, Eddie wasn't stupid, he'd understand what was meant by that.
Eddie tilted his head from side to side, "Maybe, she loves certain flowers, but gets kind of sad when they die... Where did you come up with-" Eddie froze and stalled in his sentence.
Steve winced, knowing Eddie had very quickly caught on, as his friend pulled his hand away from the wheel to point frantically at him, Steve swiftly grabbed hold of the wheel himself, admonishing the metal head for disobeying road laws.
"You like (y/n)!?" Eddie asked loudly, smacking Steve on the shoulder, seeming to be excited. Steve was confused.
"You're not mad? I mean! I don't know if I like her! But I know that she's sweet and caring, gorgeous, beautiful kids... Just... Perfect." Steve practically whispered. He looked down at his hands, playing with his fingers nervously.
Eddie slapped his arm one last time, before going back to driving, "Are you kidding!? (y/n) was my best friend growing up, basically my sister, but she needs someone, needs a guy, much as she'd hate to admit it... I know you're a good dude Harrington, she needs a good dude." Eddie finished with a slight smile.
With that, they got to their apartment building, when the hopped out of the van, the only thing they could hear was the sounds of their roommate, throwing things around and swearing. "Shit, shit, shit!"
Eddie and Steve shared a look, shaking their heads before beginning the trek up the four flights of stairs to get to their apartment, already worried before they opened the door.
Robin was stood on a chair in the kitchen, throwing whatever she could pick up at the floor, "Shit!" She kept repeating. Eddie stood with his arms folded over his chest, a smirk on his face, as he leaned against the archway, simply watching as Robin lost her mind.
Steve moved forward, trying to take the expensive glasses his mom had given him away from Robin's range of grasp. "Robin, what the hell are you doing?" He could see Robin startle once she finally realised that the boys were there.
Robin practically jumped on Steve, "Rat! I saw a rat! I swear, it was huge! It looked right at me!" She shrieked, the boys looked where she had been frantically gesturing, only to see a small mouse, sniffing around.
Eddie cooed, reaching to grab some crackers, before kneeling down and offering them to the mouse. Steve merely raised a brow at Robin, trying to keep hold of her whilst she was scrabbling to stay away from the mouse, "A huge rat, huh?" He asked sarcastically.
Seeing what the boys were now seeing, Robin stopped panicking, she got off of Steve, who was grateful, and brushed herself off, looking threateningly at the boys, "That did not happen." She grumbled. Steve nodded along with a tight smirk, trying not to laugh. "Shut up." Robin snapped, not being able to hide her smile.
Eddie, who had since picked up the mouse, was holding it close to his chest, "Aw, he's cute! Can we keep him?" He asked, trying his best at making puppy dog eyes at the other two. Steve sighed as Robin started protesting at him, not at Eddie, at Steve.
"Steve, you can't let him keep that thing! They're dirty and gross!" Robin whined, looking to the apartment's dad to solve things as quickly as possible. Eddie, on the other hand was laying it on thick, trying anything he could to let him keep the mouse.
"Aw come on Steve! Look at him!!!" He cooed, lifting the mouse, that had begun to sniff at his cheeks, allowing it to rest in his messy curls as Robin stifled a gag. "I'll do the dishes better than usual! I'll do the laundry!" He bargained.
Steve pinched the bridge of his nose, wincing, "First of all, Robin, dirty and gross may as well be the same word. Eddie, you don't do the dishes at all, and I do the laundry because neither of you can get it right." He said sternly. "I will consider you keeping the mouse, but you will be paying for it, you are taking it to the vet first to make sure it is, in fact, a he, otherwise it will make smaller mice, and if one of us gets bit, including you, we're getting rid of it." He demanded.
Eddie began squealing, trying not to get too excited and bounce up and down, considering the small rodent nesting in his hair. Robin turned to Steve, "I understand that the father has spoken and all, but come on!" She whined.
Steve smirked, "Yes he did, now go get changed, we're going to a new... friend's for dinner." He told her, turning her by her shoulders towards her bedroom.
"Steve's got a cruush!" Eddie sang from the living room.
"What?" Robin asked, clearly not hearing what Eddie had said. Steve played it off, trying to claim he hadn't said anything, but Eddie danced back into the kitchen.
"Steve has a crush! We're getting a new mom!" Eddie cheered, dancing with the new mouse, murmuring to himself about what he was going to name the small creature. Meanwhile, Robin looked to Steve, who was getting progressively more and more pink, she smirked, pointing at him.
"The neighbour?" She asked tentatively, her notion confirmed by Steve clearing his throat and looking away, "And we get to meet her!?" Robin was getting excited, beginning to dance around like Eddie, "Wait, Eddie how did you know about this before I did?" She asked, a little grumpy.
Eddie smirked, "Cause Steve loves me more," He decided, but seeing Robin reach for something else to throw, he quickly changed his tune, "Nah, I'm kidding, we just ran into her at the store, plus I knew her when we were kids, so, small world I guess." He smiled, looking down at the tiny creature in his hands, whom was nibbling at one of his chunky rings, murmuring about naming him something based on D&D...
"Wait! You already knew her! So I'm way behind in making her like me!" Robin pouted, turning away from Steve to look at Eddie, "What's she like? Is she... Progressive?" She asked with a sly smile.
Eddie laughed, "If you mean accepting, yes, if you mean gay, I don't think so, she was giving Steve the goo goo eyes earlier," He smirked, causing Steve's head to shoot up, still trying to guide Robin to her room to get ready.
"Did she?" Steve asked quickly, "When?" His voice was higher than usual, he hadn't noticed her looking at him at all.
Eddie smirked, "You were too busy making goo goo eyes at Sam," He laughed, but the smile quickly dropped, "Just so we're clear Harrington, you like (y/n) for her, right?" Steve looked confused, asking what he meant, "Well, I know just how much you want a family, don't worm your way into one just because you want one, don't hurt my friend, Harrington." Eddie told him, almost darkly.
Steve, noticing just how serious he was, nodded, "I'll admit, the life she had with her kids, is exactly the life I want, but I'm not going to steal it from (y/n), and I'm definitely not going to force my way somewhere I'm not wanted, by her, or her kids." Steve promised. Eddie nodded, turning his head away to his room, leaving to change and put his new mouse friend somewhere safer.
Steve sighed, it was weird seeing Eddie like that, it was rare to see him so serious, even in serious situations. Robin looked at Steve, smiling softly, "You really are smitten," She smirked, but it was a friendly smirk, "It's nice, you haven't been like this since Nancy..."
Steve sighed, but smiled, yes he'd been a little obsessed with Nancy, but finally managed to move on. "Shut up, just go get ready," He said, pushing her further towards her bedroom.
Steve was putting the groceries away, still thinking he should bring something, still couldn't figure out what, flowers, sparkling cider, cheese for the pasta? He was dredging the bottom of the barrel, when Eddie came out with a flourish, arms raised, "Give a warm welcome to, Hammett Cheese!" Eddie said, showing off the tiny mouse in his hand, Steve raised a brow, "Named after Kirk Hammett, guitarist for Metallica!" Eddie smirked.
"Yes, twisted into a tortured pun," Steve sighed, "Is Robin done?" He asked, finally picking out some sparking cider and a carton of orange juice to bring with them, just as Robin came into the kitchen.
~ Time Skip ~
(y/n) hummed to herself, as she wandered about the kitchen, preparing the meal, waiting with rapt excitement for Steve and Eddie, and whoever their roommate was, Robin, to arrive. Samantha was sat at the kitchen island in her highchair, kicking her feet back and forth, watching cartoons on the television set in the corner, her thumb in her mouth. Jamie was in a baby bouncer in the door frame, his sweet giggles filled the house as he bounced, his hands in the air, giddy, blue eyes filled with light.
"Sammy, you want some more juice?" (y/n) asked gently, seeing her daughter shaking her head in the reflection of the stove hood. She pursed her lips, deciding against her daughter's judgement, refilling the sippy cup of juice and chuckling when she quickly slurped most of it down. The doorbell brought (y/n) out of her idyllic family moment, she wiped her hands on a nearby dishcloth, before hurrying to the front door.
Opening it with a smile, (y/n) was greeted by the smiling faces of Steve, Eddie and Robin, as well as a bottle of sparkling cider and orange juice, the smile dropped a little, "I told you guys not to bring anything!" (y/n) sighed, but invited them in anyway. (y/n) opened the door wider, revealing the happy children, Samantha was leaning in her highchair, trying desperately to see who was coming in, Jamie was still giggling happily, bouncing.
Once Sam caught sight of Steve, she got excited, her big brown eyes lighting up, trying to get out of her chair to go and see him, (y/n) chuckled, "Steve, I think someone missed you," She giggled, asking him to go help the tot out of her chair.
Steve wasted little time, undoing the clips of the highchair and pulling the four year old out, immediately holding her on his hip, her chubby little arms wrapping around his shoulder, gripping his sweater. "Poor thing, did your mama trap you in a chair?" Steve teased, eyes glinting in (y/n)'s direction, who gasped playfully.
(y/n) went back to the stove, offering drinks to the group of guests, Robin immediately shaking her head, "No you're busy, let me," She said, moving to get the pitcher before the young mother could. (y/n) smiled and thanked her, telling her where to find glasses.
Eddie was crouched in front of baby Jamie, his head following the bouncing boy, "This one has my energy," He chuckled.
(y/n), rolling her eyes, responded, "As much as you are their Uncle Eddie, we're not related," She laughed, but secretly loved the idea, she and Eddie had always been close and it broke her heart when he and Wayne had to move away, she'd wanted to reach out when she first arrived, but didn't know how...
Eddie waved a hand, "Semantics." He said simply, leading to teasing from the rest about him using 'big boy' words. He glared playfully, "Hey, (n/n)," He asked tentatively, leading (y/n) to hum in response, not taking her eyes off the dinner, "Can- Can I hold him?" He asked, gazing at Jamie lovingly.
(y/n), smiling, agreed, picking Jamie up out of the bouncer and handing him to Eddie, who took him gingerly. "He's so soft..." He whispered, "So tiny." He held Jamie like he was worried about breaking him, which he was...
This was everything (y/n) had wanted for years, sure she skipped a few steps of her plan, she wasn't married or even in a relationship, but she had a lovely family, a beautiful home, and her old family back, and some new ones...
