"its not just a rumour but an uncomfortable truth that got out" why is this making me so sad oh my god the hockey sphere is so small too so mean rumours definitely spread like wildfire. imagine wm/sm meeting when they know next to nothing about each other except awful things that have been spread around locker rooms & being vaguely aware of them through the rumour mill and then learning to separate their new teammate from those rumours spread by teen boys and if it turns out some of them are true...well you just gotta love em no matter what
i mean i came from a very medium sized high school and shit spread so quick, i imagine the hockey sphere is like that x1000. everyone sort of knows everyone and allegiances are always fucked bc ppl switch teams and groups and countries
there’s laidback sam dickinson hearing shit about how michael misa warms up on his knees, choosing blatantly to ignore it because what the fuck and that is not his business. he sort of knows that guy and he’s not too interested if finding out if that’s a thing people say bc they’re assholes or if it’s a thing they say bc has a grain of truth in at and they’re assholes. him and misa really become friends at the sharks, and sometimes dickie looks at him, oblivious, sincere, stupid michael misa, and thinks, how many people have said and done awful things to you that you’ve just brushed off
misa heard a thousand different variations of dickie’s an asshole, arrogant, won’t shut up, should be put down like a dog, etc etc. he never paid any mind bc he likes that guy! he seems nice! and every day at the sharks he’s like wow, people must have just been so jealous of him!
the willmack rumors, on both sides are probably much more severe but also more ridiculous. they went to rival colleges where it was funny to make up the most insane shit you could think of about the opposing team. mack heard the gambit of how the BC line were all fucking each other, to smith was actually a freak celibate catholic, to smith paid someone to do all his classwork. mack didn’t really care whatever the fuck that guy was doing off the ice because he was kicking mack’s ass on it. and most of the time people would talk trash about him it would either end in, but i’ve never met him, or he’s actually a cool guy though.
side note, sort of: i love the characterization of mack hating will so much while at BU. he did not want to hear about will fucking smith unless it was about hockey and how they could take him out. despite it, mack can respect anyone who plays good hockey, the fact he has a cute face is not important. he was fully prepared to put his best foot forward at dev camp but not really like the guy— which crashes and burns bc oh! he is actually really cool
i feel like the rumors will was hearing about generational talent macklin celebrini were mostly that he’s a hockey robot, which boring. the other stuff was flyover things from BU campus life, he jizzed in some girls car, he’s kind of an asshole, he punched a hole in the coach’s office. none of it stuck out to will, he knew the guy was going to be good, was going to go places and that was way more interesting than anything else. oh, will smith hockey nerd
and will was pleasantly surprised that upon really meeting macklin, getting to know him, that he was insane and whatever people were saying or are saying about him can never capture the pure bright light that is mack. he likes whatever’s wrong with him, wants to stick his hands in the wound of his stomach just to feel the warmth. also that be a problem
