You have your cast of canon and/or original characters, the perfect setting, the perfect plot, and now you’re ready to write your masterpiece. So you write. And write. And write….and write. Wow…your story needs a lot of words…WHY DOES YOUR STORY TAKE SO MANY TO TELL WHY WERE YOU NOT WARNED?!!11
Writing can be a long process, and it can be frustrating when you’re just…stuck. When you’ve hit a block, it might be a sign to step back and take a break (note that this doesn’t mean “take a break forever”). Take a walk, eat some cake, play more LongStory (you know, for inspiration)… Remember you’re supposed to be having fun and that you are writing first and foremost for yourself. Don’t try to force yourself to regurgitate words.
In my personal experience, I spend the same amount of time if not more going back and fixing what I’ve forced myself to write. I find it more productive to go back and edit what I’ve already written when I’m going through a writer’s block, or looking over my timeline and making sure everything makes sense and has remained consistent throughout.
Charlie Jane Anders wrote an article going through different types of writer’s blocks, so if you find you’re going through something similar to one of the described scenarios, there might be some advice you find helpful.
... Good luck!
