Hello! I can't seem to find quite what I want just searching on the web, but what happens to a fungus when it dies? All I can seem to find is either how fungi decompose other things or one specific paper about ways fungi kill their own cells. So what does happen?

so, as you likely know, fungi are not the only decomposer. another common decomposer is specialised bacteria !! they often work together with fungi to decompose plants & animals.

when a fungus dies, a different fungal species can aid in its decomposition, yes, but it is mostly bacteria that will cause the decay.

small bugs, worms & micro-organisms also help fungi break down by eating their hyphae. :-) but, in the end, it is the bacteria that does most of the biochemical processes needed to break down organic matter.
