Old School Resident Evil "Fans"
Gotta get this off my chest. I do. I don't care if I'm hated, belittled, or looked down upon because of it. I givenoshits.
There are several fandoms I despise. Homestuck, Bronies, and the so-called "Old school" Resident Evil "fans." I'm not saying I hate individual people. I have very dear and very amazing friends that like Homestuck, MLP, and older RE games, but it's the groups as an entirety I dislike. "Old School" Resident Evil "fans" are by far the worst, though. They're the whiniest bunch of crybabies I've ever seen. They also seem to insult your intelligence because you might prefer the newer games to the "scary" older ones.
I'm a true Resident Evil fan. Old, new, spin-off, handheld, I like it. I might prefer some games over the others, but as a whole I love Resident Evil. I started off with REMake. I saw the first RE1 being played, but never personally played it myself. I loved RE2, thought RE3 was so-so, really enjoyed Code: Veronica, but to me Resident Evil 4 was Capcom's best entry into the Resident Evil series. Thank Cod they got rid of those cruddy archaic controls and that horrid fixed camera angle! They had finally made the perfect Resident Evil game!
Of course, this is what started the Resident Evil fandom divide. "THE GAME'S NOT SCARY ANYMORE! BAWW" "THEY CHANGED THE CONTROLS! BAWW!" "LEON'S TOO BADASS NOW! BAAWW!" First off, since when was Resident Evil "scary?" Sure, it provided very tense moments here and there and lots of jump scares. If someone jumping out of a closet makes you piss yourself, then sure, the old Resident Evils were the most frightening games on earth. They insisted that Capcom's ruined Resident Evil by changing up their "tried and true" formula. Nay I say. If Capcom continued with the "old school" style it'd most likely be in the same situation Silent Hill is in. I'll get to Silent Hill later. Resident Evil needed a facelift. An-I have to- an extreme makeover or it simply wasn't going to survive. The old school formula worked well in the '90s and early '00s, but games were getting more complex and that formula was starting to decay much like the zombies in Resident Evil.
Another great move they made was actuallynothaving Umbrella be the star evil corporation of the show. I'm kinda disappointed they're bringing Umbrella back for RE6, but I'll get over it soon enough. This time hey had this sadistic riualistic cult that uses parasites. No t-virus, no G-virus, and at long last no more zombies! This time they were exploring different biohazardous threats and what I find to be a more frightening one if you think about it. They're not obvious like with zombies. Other than the red eyes, they could easily pass for a human. The cult itself Los Illuminados was a wonderful addition! Granted, Saddler was all in it for the money and he was producing B.O.W.s, but it was a cult! Not a corporation! And I love parasites, you guys, I really do. They're cute little fuckers. That fish-tongue parasite? FFTTH.. I want to hug it! ANYHOW. It was different than virusess and it was a change. A change that once again pissed off the "old school fans." Capcom was reinventing their formula. Trying something new and itpaidoff. Resident Evil 4 is the most successful game in the series. It's on about every freaking console except for the Super Nintendo just about it. They gave Kennedy a better, more sarcastic attitude! He was no longer a rookie cop!
Character development is crucial for anything. In movies, in shows, in book, and in games. A character that goes through as much shit as the Resident Evil cast does is bound to change and to evolve. Take Chris Redfield for example. He's come a long, loongg way from being an ex-Air Force pilot. He's seen friends die in front of him, faced monsters that we couldn't even imagine, and has traveled through the very center of Hell more than once. Naturally that'd change a guy if not kill them. Chris bettered himself. He bulked up, knew that he'd have to get stronger to take on Wesker and all the B.O.W.s in his job and now in RE6 we see him actually suffering from PTSD! Why..why hasn't Capcom done this earlier?! I'd go through Raccoon City and I'd be plastered off my ass 24/7 when I wasn't bawling like a baby. Old school Re fans like consistency. They're afraid of change. They're kinda like children. When they saw Chris bulk up in RE5, what'd they do? That's right. "BAAWWW! YOU CHANGED HIM. BAAWW!" Chris, you guys, is human. He's not a robot. He's been through shit. So the guy wanted to lift weights and/or inject steroids. Let him. He's still the same guy with just a little(okay, a lot) more bulk. Same with Leon...er, maybe not the bulk thing exactly, but he's changed. He can't be naive all the time. That shit'd get old fast.
Now, recall how I mentioned Silent Hill? Silent Hill took the old school formula and they made it work for them. They actually made ascarygame and they did it right. Resident Evil was definitely more made out to be more action-based. Silent Hill, on the other hand, was psychological/survival horror to the core. I only play Silent Hill 1-3 (and Origins)and don't touch the "new school" Silent Hill games. But you know what I do that these so called "fans" of Resident Evil do? I don't insult those that like the newer games, I don't question their IQ, nor do I result to calling them "retarded newborns." Seriously, I was called that when I said I like the way Resident Evil 6 was turning out. Hell, Capcom made Revelations to try to appease their old fans and they still snubbed their nose up at it.
I'll conclude it here. If these fans don't like the newer games then don't play them. It's that easy. Keep your positive memories and continue playing your old games. Just because fans like Resident Evil 4-5 doesn't make them any less a fan than you. It doesn't mean they're some "Call of Duty fanboy" nor does it mean they're "retarded." Just take you games and enjoy them, okay?
