Her words are too quick, and betray her. The syllables stumble over one another, little creatures rushing for shelter from the world. It makes her bite down on another fingernail, manicured when the day began and now a massacre of chipped polish and short, sad nails. She tells herself she’s better than this, wicking sky blue flecks from her teeth.

“I’ll have you and Aniki waiting for me on the other side.” And, she notes, she owes her brother some sort of gratitude for giving them this moment together. It’s nice, being alone with Shinji. He isn’t as easy to upend as Akira in times like these. There’s not something lurking behind his eyes when he looks at her. She’s never fully at ease, but Shinji does have a way of making days like these easier.

She lowers her hand, reaches for his. 

“You know what you can do while I’m under?” It’s the little things, the things that distract her and, she hopes, those around her. “Head down to the gift shop and get me a Hi-Chew. They never bring me anything good once I’m out. There’s only so much fruit I can stand.” His hand is warm in hers, and she squeezes it affectionately with a smile.

“If Aniki wants to say anything, drag him with you.” At least if he picked out a candy to obsessively nibble on, he wouldn’t burn through a week’s worth of smokes in the first hour. Really, Shinji would be doing the both of them a favor.

The “... What?” that came out of his mouth wasn’t even Japanese. Tired eyes blown wide open as he stared at the thug. Kihoon sat up, his elbow propping him up on his side, searching for even the slightest hint of a joke from Shinji but... Nothing. He looked serious. He definitely sounded serious enough. Which made him then think that this was a legitimate thought that ran through his head. Kihoon’s mouth opened and closed, eyes darting to focus on anything but Shinji at that moment.

                                            How were they going to run away?

Shinji was a thug. A Yakuza thug. The ownership of which ran deep into the skin of his back and shoulder, patterns that Kihoon could trace all day but still patterns that he was part of the Yakuza and would be to the day he died. Furthermore, Kihoon still owed the Korean mafia for his mother’s ( shady ) debt. The sum of which steadily increased with each passing day, hour and second he didn’t work the streets that he failed to please. They weren’t people of great importance to the Yakuza, but what if they got wise to what they were doing? Knowing how Shinji was as a man who would protect those he cared about by any means necessary, he’d probably die protecting Kihoon. Could he live without Shinji? Could he live on knowing how it felt to be loved so dearly that he’d give his life up?

                                                                  “We can’t.”

Kihoon was a coward. He couldn’t live like that, period. In his mind, he was lucky to even meet Shinji, let alone how the stars aligned to allow Kihoon to be loved by him. He couldn’t lose that. God, and Arisu– his best friend. Could he leave her behind? Sure, she had people like Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima in her corner, she had a whole family of gangsters that would die for her, but a friend? He couldn’t get up and leave her behind, he didn’t know if he’d be able to sleep at night knowing he abandoned his friend.

Like a fish, Kihoon’s mouth opened and shut, his eyes fluttering as he tried to form a coherent sentence outside of stammers. “You’ll... You might, I mean... an’ Ari, God...” 

                                                     Why was his heart throbbing? 

                                                          Where could they run?

Was he excited at the prospect that Shinji would start a completely new life with him outside of Kamurocho? Outside of Tokyo– outside of Japan or Asia entirely? Did they have that kind of money? Kihoon hadn’t left Japan in years, he hadn’t left Asia before either. Could Shinji speak English or would he learn if they left for western country? Would they be safe outside of Asia? Sure, it would be hard to find them outside of Japan, especially if they went to the United States, but a Yakuza is a Yakuza, through and through. How would Shinji and Kihoon earn money outside of what they knew? Kihoon was barely making any money, since he began dating Shinji he rarely took on customers and if he did, he felt the need to see or talk to Shinji after. Could they survive like this outside of Kamurocho? And what was different outside of Japan? Would a relationship really be accepted? Would they still be judged? Were there any ways of keeping it a secret from foreigners? ( wait, they would be the foreigners. ) Their life in Kamurocho wasn’t perfect, hell, it wasn’t easy but the people of Japan didn’t say anything. They didn’t accept a gay couple, sure, but they rarely said anything whenever Kihoon and Shinji held hands or entered a motel together... The only times they weren’t looked at funny was when Kihoon dressed, behaved and looked like a bonafide woman. Would they get away with that anywhere else? 

Or was his heart hammering against his chest in fear of what was to come? Was he panicking? God, what if Shinji’s family figured out their plans and dispatched of him and–

Kihoon felt warmth around him, soft and bare against his torso, the undoubtably familiar sensation of another man’s body against his own.

                                                                      Oh...

He was being held. Out of concern, he was being held. Out of love, he was being held. And Kihoon, once again, melted in his embrace as his heartbeat vibrated against Shinji’s chest. He could feel his hand in his curly hair, stroking his head just how he liked it. Kihoon’s eyes slid closed as he lost himself in his lovers embrace.

maybe it’s hypocritical  ,  but seeing others in pain when she’s sworn to protect her friends pisses her off  .  “  you said you had it handled  !  that didn’t look very well handled to me  .  ”  she knows it’s part of the business  ,  it’s not unexpected  ,  and yet she can’t help but get angry at the thought of shinji putting himself in unnecessary danger  .  “  i don’t know who you think you are  ,  but you’re not invincible  .  you've gotta think this shit through  .  ”  

she doesn’t care who hears her as she drags him into a side street  ,  hand gripped around his forearm without a care for the pain  .  it’s a wonder as to why she answers his calls  --  or anyone’s at this point  .  if it’s not one thing it’s another  ,  why can’t people ever take care of themselves  ?  

a sigh  ;  she’s being too harsh  ,  but to admit so would also be admitting she cares about him  .  “  fucking idiot  ,  ”  she mutters under her breath  ,  releasing his arm to instead poke at his chest .  “  look at you  --  all brawn and no fuckin’ brains  .  wonder who you learned that from  .  ”  it’s a mystery as to how some of these guys survive out there  ,  given the complete disregard for their own lives they carry  .  someone’s gotta teach them a basic survival instinct  ,  even if it’s in the form of yelling at them for being morons  . 

“  next time at least give me a call before you do something stupid  ,  not after  .  ”

ON FRIENDSHIP

@soaplandloved : Headcannon about how she treats her friends

when akali actually considers someone her friend , she is incredibly protective of them . it’s in part due to what she learned growing up , but also because of her need to keep people from suffering because of her . she’s more likely to throw herself head first into dangerous situations for her friends than she is for herself  --  whereas she likes to be level headed and calm when she’s on her own , there’s no faster way to ignite her rage than to threaten a friend of hers 

she also likes to treat her friends  --  money doesn’t really matter to her , so she’s always got an infinite amount on hand to get something really special for those she cares about . usually if someone mentions something they want , she’ll surprise them with it . it’s never a case of trying to buy their friendship though , this is usually well after they’ve established a proper bond . she just likes being able to make her friends’ lives easier or get them things that make them happy . 

when it comes to being emotional with her friends however , that’s where she really lacks in being a proper friend . most of her interactions with other people are quite shallow , even if she does care for them . she would never really offer a shoulder to cry on , she’s much better at trying to distract people and have a good time rather than focus on other people’s troubles . she’d much sooner drag someone to a club than sit down and talk about their latest ex , for example . to her , distraction and bottling things up inside her always works , so it’s the same method she tries to use to solve other people’s problems .
