now that i’ve finally gotten a solid idea for the “hugh finally caves and uses dark magic in askr” plotline down, don’t mind me just posting it..........

pls read this meta on dark magic and this hugh headcanon super quickly though for a bit of context!

the incident occurs during one of the rokkr sieges between book iii and book iv.

lugh and chad are overwhelmed and overrun by the rokkr and its reinforcements. hugh is close enough to notice, and hurries over to protect them.

while he is able to save them from meeting an untimely demise, the trio are still... in a very bad spot. at that point, with their backs against the wall and his anima magic not cutting it, hugh decides that the safety of these two children is more important than his own stubbornness and fear.

while he’s not entirely sure what he did to clear an escape route for lugh and chad, he knows it was elder magic. and that he tapped into his own quintessence to make the magic work without a tome or an item to use as a sacrifice... and that whether he likes it or not, his family’s legacy is officially a part of who he is now-- he let it in, after all. the darkness will always be there, whispering temptations in the corner of his mind to just give in, let it serve him-- prove himself.
