Socality Barbie: Get it while the triple-shot organic cruelty-free single-origin skinny soy almond carob mocha is hot!
Quick PSA reminder that now Darby Cisneros has revealed herself as the creator of the Socality Barbie Instagram and officially stopped posting new work, the account won’t be up forever. Go check it out now while you can at https://www.instagram.com/socalitybarbie/
For those of us not keyed in to every twitch of the social media landscape, Socality Barbie is an excellent parody account of PNW Hipster Instagramming, which, as Cisneros’s account shows, is a very aesthetically specific and rule-bound genre. Cisneros combines artsy filters, carefully chosen hipster costuming, stunning half-foggy PNW locations, Portlandia-inspired props, and EXTREMELY hipster-dippy captions about “authenticity” and “community” to call attention to the overuse of these conventions in a movement ostensibly about abandoning convention altogether and living up to a truer, more unique self. My personal favorite is “It's like we're all competing to make the best computer screen saver and the winner gets crowned most authentic”. Followed by a crown emoji and about five thousand hashtags.
A lot of side concepts are also touched upon - technology dependency in a social movement so focused on natural beauty and outdoorsiness, the weirdly defensive regionalism of PNW hipsterism, the struggle between communal and individualistic impulses in hipsterism at large, the clash of “authentic folk living” (historically not conducive to veganism) with social consciousness about dietary sourcing. Socality Barbie speaks the language I heard growing up in PDX, calling out all the contradictions and uncertainties in the Hipster Voice (TM). It’s awesome.
In her final post, Cisneros stated that Socality Barbie has fulfilled her purpose: to “open the door to a lot of great discussions like: how we choose to present ourselves online, the insane lengths many of us go to to create the perfect Instagram life, and calling into question our authenticity and motives”.
Socality Barbie, with my fair-trade organic single-origin small-batch skinny soy gingerbread latte, I salute you.
#12 - R.I.P. Hipster Barbie - Instagram All-Stars
Everyone heard about Soacality Barbie, aka Hipster Barbie. I bet, she’s an Instagram all-star. Unfortunately the account is closed now, but you still can browse the hilarious pictures of the hipster Barbie, whose creator mocks the millennial hipsters’ cliched photography styles on Instagram. With a Barbie doll.

#LiveAuthentic With Socality Barbie
Hipster Barbie is a real thing and it’s kind of hilarious. A Portland wedding photographer, that chooses to remain anonymous, created Socality Barbie to poke fun at all the insta users that abuse the #liveauthentic and #socality hashtags.
“People were all taking the same pictures in the same places and using the same captions,” she says. What better way to get the message across than an instagram account with over 7,000 followers?
Socality Barbie is so authentic even her clothes are handmade and most of the locations she visits are in fact real. Thank goodness for Portland’s perfectly hipster landscapes. We’re totally ready for Hipster Barbie to hit the shelves. Mattel, it’s your move!
Barbie is more #blessed than you — and she knows it.
