Sexting - risks vs. rewards

Adolescents who sext are more likely to have more casual hookups which are associated with nonconsensual sex and potential sexual health risks, such as STIs

HOWEVER

Sexting can have positive behavioral outcomes such as increased sexual activity, greater arousal, happiness, and excitement about sex, making sexting a promotive behavior for some

Other harmful effects?

Sexting can lead to rejection or humiliation due to private, intimate information being spread and seen by others

Adolescents can be pressured into sexting when they do not want to

Legal trouble can come from sexting - adolescents under 18 can be criminally prosecuted for spreading explicit content of minors

These factors contribute to the relevance of social work as well - the negative feelings that can arise from sexting in addition to a loss of autonomy can be harmful to an individual’s mental health and identity formation
