[Hi! Sorry to bug you but for your Jet/Zuko fic rec I was wondering if you knew where I could read "Float"/"Crossing" now? If they maybe moved elsewhere?]
I’ve got a lot of questions about this because of a fic rec I made quite some time ago, and I’m sad to say that as far as I know those fics no longer exist on the internet.
In 2014, the author of Float/Crossing – sodomquake – was the subject of a truly despicable act of concern trolling, fandom-policing, and doxxing to the point that it seriously impacted her real life. As a result, sodomquake deleted her presence from the internet; this means that all of her fics are, as far as I know, gone from the internet permanently.
You can read a breakdown of the the incident itself here, can see a reblog of the original wrongful ‘call-out’ post here (with commentary and a gutwrenching response from sodomquake herself), and a discussion of the incident on the anon meme.
On why she felt it necessary to delete her accounts, I think sodomquake herself said it best:
I am not stupid enough to think anyone outside of fandom is going to look past the surface of any of this, even past the weirdness of writing fanfiction with sexual content, if they run across it. So I have to do what I need to do to keep from being fired from my actual job and leaving both myself and my very adult wife of five years to starve to death.
Thanks for reminding me what happens to women who become visible, Tumblr. I’d almost forgotten.
I wasn’t involved in that corner of fandom at the time when this happened, and as a result I only found out that it happened after the fact. As someone who has communicated – however briefly – with sodomquake, I cannot express how angry and upset it has made me to realize what people on this website put her through. Whenever we spoke, sodomquake was always kind, friendly, and modest in the extreme. She didn’t like being in the spotlight, and was quiet happy to quietly follow her passion for writing in the background of fandom. This entire experience must’ve been a nightmare for her, and I’m truly saddened that I only found out after her account had been deleted. I very much would’ve liked to message her with my support
The entire incident should serve as a painful reminder that when people do this -- when they decide to ‘call people out’ based on little to no evidence, when they decide that their own righteous morality and need for validation is more important than actual facts and/or other peoples’ well-being, there are consequences to that decision.
There are a few downloaded copies of ‘Crossing’ and ‘Float’ that I’ve only just discovered floating around in the achives of the anonmeme: you can search the thread for them in this thread. There’s a part of me that feels guilty for even being concerned about her fics when something so awful happened, and another part that feels uncomfortable pointing out ways to access those fics when the author so clearly attempted to delete her presence from the internet. In the end, though, I genuinely believe that Float/Crossing are pieces of art -- and if anyone really, truly wants to get all of the enjoyment and emotion from those stories as I have, it would be hypocritical for me to not link to them.
This is probably a slightly longer answer than you were expecting, but... yeah. Fandom can be a wonderful place, but it can also be incredibly ugly and outright repugnant at times -- and incidents like this remind us of everything we shouldn’t let ourselves become.
