The default number of bombs in a regular run of Story of Eastern Wonderland is 3, while in the Extra stage is 1.
Usually, when losing a life, the bomb counter will be reset to default, meaning that you will lose all the extra bombs you had. If you keep losing lives and end up reaching your last life, your bomb counter will be filled with 5 bombs in a regular run, but only with 3 during the Extra stage.
The maximum amount of lives and bombs you can get in Story of Eastern Wonderland is 6 lives and 5 bombs. Even if you have a high score and you’ll hear the “Extend” sound you won’t get any additional lives if you already have 6. But if you have maximum lives and lesser bombs when you’ll hear the “Extend” sound you’ll get a bomb instead of a life.
The stage 4 midboss usually gives you 1 bomb and 1 life if defeated. But if you already have maximum lives, she’ll just drop a B item instead. If you do not have maximum lives and you defeat the second appearance of the stage 4 midboss, she will drop a 1UP. However, if you get an Extend right after that, which puts you to 6 lives, the 1UP will not count at all when you will collect it. It will not increase the bomb count either.
It is possible to timeout the Five Magic Stones in Story of Eastern Wonderland. I found out about this at en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/User:KirbyComment/Story_of_Eastern_Wonderland_Info, but the person used Cheat Engine to test it.
So, I've tested it in regular gameplay (without using any cheats) and it's not a long fight (less than 2:30 minutes). Please view the video for the whole battle or you can see in the gifs below only the moment when the stones explode by themselves.
It seems that Rika’s tank from Story of Eastern Wonderland stage 1 does not damage you if you fly over it during its first two (and a half) phases.
Right after the laser ends, the tank will get a red circle on the Yin-Yang symbol and will start shooting from it. Be careful then, you might get hit by one of the bullets.
