do you ever just...... remember les mis
wow
anyway i think it’s interesting how a love for something can evolve because like, i still absolutely adore les mis, but my intense obsession with les amis has faded, a bit??? i mean, obviously i still love them, but i think that my time playing in their sandbox has come to an end (as a lot of you who followed me for les mis content years ago probably know!!)
i truly did love that time, though. the fact that they had really basic templates to kind of play with and mold into characters of my own was so much fun and just gave really interesting flavor to the community, the characters, the stories created and put out into the world. like, the les mis community (especially that of like, 2013-2015, which was when i was most active in it) completely created their own out of not very much.
now, though, listening to it, i’m coming to appreciate other characters a lot more. valjean and javert, especially. like, listening to stars is just so beautiful? and bring him home, which honestly, didn’t used to be a song i liked very much?
towards the end of my junior year i got kind of oversaturated with les mis stuff and fell off the radar a bit, after i finished my giant essay on cosette. between seeing it live on broadway, assistant stage managing it, reading the entire, unabridged version in eleven days, and then writing a massive paper about cosette, i kind of les-mis-ed myself out.
i still have so much love and respect for the show and the community i found around it, though? like, honestly, i have so many friends who i made from a shared love of it, and the music is beautiful, and just. i don’t know. it’s something that’s just so important to me, even if it’s kind of fallen on a back burner. i can’t imagine a world where i don’t have a deep passion for it, even if it’s not something i talk about very much anymore.
ANYWAY fuck me up i still love les mis and i’m listening to it right now and i?? ?? ???? ????? love?????? everything about it?????????
your girl is back thinking about les mis because she’s taking a french history class, this time here for the tu vs. vous debate
the use of tu: some thoughts
enjolras and grantaire are equals
same age, same status, enjolras isn’t really super into like, leaders being above their people, etc. etc. etc. this is one argument for using “tu”
another is the idea that he follows a lot of robespierre’s ideals (citizen, etc.) and robespierre made it so that people didn’t use “vous”
enjolras using “tu” with those around him/everyone in general would be a way of leveling the playing field and making it so that everyone is equal
enjolras is all about that equality
anyway i don’t think it’s particularly weird that enjolras used the tu form vs. the vous form mostly because they’re equals and also because of who enjolras is as a person
i just keep thinking about some of robespierre’s rules and how enjolras uses some of them
to be honest i haven’t been active in the les mis fandom in a long time and can’t really remember how enjolras feels about robespierre but i know i didn’t like him
but like, he does follow some of robespierre’s practices/whatever so anyway it is A Thought
Enjolras Is Into Equality And Shit: A Portion Of A Novel That Is Only Really Sort Of About This Band Of Merry Boys Trying To Fight A Revolution And Is Really Mostly Just One Big Jesus Metaphor
“les mis is a classic novel and everyone dies what do you mean it’s laugh-out-loud funny”
“my friend my dude there is an absolutely absurd sequence where valjean breaks out of a convent via a coffin and almost gets buried alive and there is not a single scene in literature ever that will be funnier than that portion of this novel”
i feel like i’m a theater person who’s just masquerading as a theater person, sometimes, because i love it but not with the same fiery passion as some people
and then i kind of. look at my love for les mis. and it fascinates me how some people can have that love for practically every show they see.
les mis changed me, and it was an anchor for me, and it was one of the most influential pieces of media and art that i’ve ever consumed, and it-- from the brick to the musical to the movie-- is more important to me than i’m able to put into words, sometimes
and i guess that’s the whole point of theater, the whole point of media, the whole point of art
i love theater in a quieter way than a lot of people. there’s a lot about it that i don’t like, to be perfectly honest. but it came to me when i needed it. and les mis came to me when i needed it. it’s art and it’s love and it’s hard work and that’s what all media is, honestly.
art is there for scared fifteen-year-olds who don’t know where their lives are headed, who don’t know what’s coming, who don’t understand what they’ve come from. it’s there for everyone. and whether you love it in a loud way or a quiet way, it’s for you.
sometimes i remember that??? i wrote a 4k word essay on les mis and a tale of two cities and it was all about cosette and lucie manette and??????? it was actually???? not terrible??? i put a lot of work into it and also just like. a lot of love.
i recently straight-up offered to fight a girl in my cast because she told me that she hated cosette and like. i know that i was a cosette defender long before that essay but it just made me love her even more and she’s so important and just. ahhh. my darling. my angel.
honestly les mis is so good
i heard just a bit of the musical earlier today and i just
man, i know i don’t really blog about it much anymore but goddamn will les mis always have a special place in my heart and good lord do i love that musical and the brick and just everything about it
it honestly changed my life and it was and is so important to me
i love it
