Maison du Bonheur (2017) follows Julianne Sellam, a Parisian astrologer. She’s lived in the same apartment for 50 years. It’s called Maison du Bonheur, which means “house of happiness.” Julianne talks about her history and walks us through parts of her daily life: watering the flowers, baking bread, and doing her makeup.

This is one of those documentaries that’s just about an ordinary, wonderful, charming individual. Sofia Bohdanowicz comes to stay with her through a friend, having never met or spoken to Julianne. At first, Sofia makes moves to keep herself out of the film, but realizes that it is impossible. When Julianne overhears Sofia recording a voice diary about a bad pastry, she takes Sofia to her favorite bakery the next day. She leaves voicemails just checking in. Julianne’s warmth and compassion towards others is part of her character, and thankfully Sofia decides to include herself in the film (because we’ve already witnessed her involvement in the final edit, obviously). 

This is a totally pleasurable documentary about a great person. I love humans and I love this movie.
