(for @apprenticesofia's apprentice, sofia lmao)
Sal let out a surprised wheeze as Diego hopped into his lap, laughing and stroking his head lovingly. "You're a little big to be a lap dog," he said breathlessly, but he continued to stroke the dog and made no efforts to remove him. Diego lied down, tail wagging.
Sitting only a small distance away on the bench, Sofia giggled. "Sorry about him. I can ask him to move."
"No, no!" Sal objected instantly. "I mean, he's not bothering me." He glanced over at his own familiar, who had been uncharacteristically tranquil, curled up on Sofia's lap. "I don't think I've ever seen her that calm." She almost seemed asleep, aside from some slow tail wags.
Sofia beamed. "She's a perfect little angel, aren't you?" she gushed, addressing the last part to Aria and stroking the fox's chin.
"I promise she's really not once you get to know her." Sal grinned. "You should come visit us sometime. I'm sure Aria would love it. She's completely different around you."
She lit up, eyes sparkling. "I would love to! Diego seems to like you, too. I don't think he's ever warmed up to anyone so fast," she commented, amused.
A sudden thought struck him. "Did, uh, did I ever actually introduce myself? I think I was too busy adoring your dog." He cleared his throat. "Sorry. I'm Salvius. Or Sal. You can call me Sal."
She gave him one of those smiles that makes a person's heart melt. "I'm Sofia."
Do it, do it, just do it already-
"Maybe we could, uh, meet here tomorrow, if you're free," he suggested, flushing and studying and ground. "Uh, you know. For the familiars. I take Aria here pretty often anyway."
Using his familiar as a medium to ask to see this girl again, however cowardly, was still an achievement in his book.
"Oh, sure! Diego and I just started coming here, but he seems to like it and I think I really enjoy this place, too."
He urged himself to actually maintain a bit of eye contact, but it was hard when her eyes were like literal pools of beauty and sincerity- did that even make any sense?
He laughed nervously and nodded. "Y-Yeah, it's really, um, pretty around here. More so today..."
"Is it?" Sofia asked, grinning over at him. She looked around the serene little park. "It is a nice day today."
Diego let out a little huff that Sal could only interpret as a type of laugh.
"Yeah!" he agreed hastily. "The weather. It's- it's- yeah." Sunny days weren't normally his thing, actually, but with the way it made Sofia's hair nearly glow, he couldn't complain.
She laughed at his flustered stammering and gave Aria a final pet before setting her gently on the bench. "I would love to stay longer, but Diego still hasn't had lunch. So... I'll see you tomorrow?" She have a hopeful smile.
Sal had to stop himself from nodding frantically. "Yeah! We'll be here."
"Wonderful. Come on Diego," Sofia called.
Slowly, Diego stood above Sal's lap, their heights about equal with Sal sitting down. He licked Sal's face once like a goodbye gesture and hopped back down, following his owner. Sal watched them walk away until Aria got his attention by crawling on his lap, still fairly calm.
See again? Wow, she wasn't even repeating herself.
"Yeah. We'll see them again."
Aria stretched, staring up at him. Very smooth, she teased.
He took him a moment to realize she meant his exchange with Sofia. "Hey!" He'd still managed to ask to see her again tomorrow, and had given her a sort of vague but not really subtle compliment. These were new milestones for him!
He stroked Aria's fur gently and chuckled. "Well, I got a kiss from one of them, didn't I?"
