this has been said but the shift in feminist discourse lately from "women shouldn't be valued by their appearance" to "women should make things to make them feel good about how they look!" really bugs me. like have you ever thought about WHY you feel the need to modify yourself to "feel good about how you look"? why does that determine anything about your self-worth? its not "all women are pretty" its "women shouldn't have to be pretty" bc we shouldnt. your desirability does not determine your value as a person. like have you ever felt superior to everyone else in a room bc you were smarter? i've never watched carrie (1976) bc i really love the book and even though i know it's a highly praised adaptation i CANNOT for the LIFE OF ME make sense out of carrie being skinny and fitting beauty standards 100%.. like her being fat, having acne and being considered ugly wasn't a central part of the plot...... i mean yeah she was also bullied for being a "religious freak" and bc of her supernatural powers etc but you can't convince me people would feel a lot more sympathy for her if it was a skinny pretty girl. and yet people who haven't read the book have tried to convince me she's not fat in the book lmao they literally call her a pig in like the first scene
