Christmas mornings were always just a regular day to you and Joe. Maybe a few extra kisses, and a little more affection than usual-- but you have a baby now.
It was stressful, spending weeks looking for something you werent even sure Grayson would like. You'd buy something, then return it, then repeat that process. Eventually you settled on around 6 presents, all full of chew toys, and those obnoxious learning toys.
You and Joe had spent all night wrapping, and perfectly lining them under the tree, even shedding a few tears. Because it was emotional. It was his first christmas, and it was just very different.
When morning came, you and Joe spent some time downstairs, making sure everything looked absolutely perfect for Grayson. Not like he would care, he was nearly 5 months old. But still, its the thought that counts.
The faint green light above the stove read " 6:34 ". Early light filtered through the windows like rays of soft gold. The smell of coffee, and christmas candles wafted through the house, making it extra cozy.
It was when you heard that first little wail, you jumped in excitement. You quietly ran to his room, only to see Grayson on his knees, leaning against the crib railing, as he sobbed.
" G'morning grayy- " You cooed, reaching into the crib for his chubby body.
His tiny hands clutched your shirt as you pulled him against you. His wet face fell onto your shoulder, that messy head of hair brushing against your neck.
You pressed a soft kiss to his head, then lowered him down onto the changing table. He sat down with a little plop, his eyes were squinting when he looked up at you. He was adorable.
After changing his diaper, and getting him into that Santa onesie, you picked him up, and carried him into the living room. Joe was on his phone on the couch, slouched against the armrest with his glasses hanging low on his nose.
His head turned when he heard your footsteps, and Grayson's soft noises. A smile bled onto his face, immediately standing up and holding out his hands to cup his face.
" Hey buddy- " He mumbled, taking him from your arms, and into his.
" You see what Santa brough you? " He cooed, turning his head towards the glimmering tree.
His eyes were wide with curiosity, darting around to see all of the different lights, and the decorations strung up. A string of drool spilled down his chin, and onto Joe's hand.
Joe didn't seem to notice, he wouldn't care regardless. He's gotten more spit up on him than anything.
Grayson was sat on the floor, a little wobbly at first, but eventually he sat up on his chubby legs.
You and Joe sat behind him, watching as he slowly crawled towards the boxes under the tree. His clammy hands reached out for a box, pulling it into his hold.
He looked back at you and Joe, eyes still wide. Joe had pulled out his phone, recording the moment like he'd never see him open presents again.
" Open it dude, see whatcha' got. " Joe spoke, the tiniest smirk pulling on his lips.
You had left a little piece of wrapping paper on the side for him to open everything easier, since you knew he wouldn't be able to with his tiny fingers.
He pulled at the paper, tearing it up. He held onto the paper, clearly more interested in that then his actual gift. Joe had to take the paper from him so he'd actually ackowledge the box.
He looked down at the gift with wide eyes, drool dropping onto it. Then, the most addictive toothy grin broke out onto his face. It was one of his favorite characters from a random childrens series.
His cackle carried through the room, pure and unfiltered baby giggles. Joe looked at you from behind the camera, one of those smug smiles he always did.
You looked back at him, laughing quietly. Grayson had never laughed this hard at anything before, so this was different.
---
The rest of the morning went the same. Grayson opening gifts, staring at them, just to play with the wrapping paper more.
Grayson was currently on his playmat in the living room, cluttering his toys around, while you and Joe watched from the kitchen.
Joe had a cup of coffee in his hand, his other hand resting on your waist while you stood infront of him.
His eyes were locked onto your face, as you focused on your phone, looking over the photos and videos you got of Grayson that morning.
You felt eyes on you, and looked up. Joe was staring you down, with the prettiest smile. You returned the smile with furrowed brows.
" What? " You murmured.
" Nothin'. " He shook his head with a shrug, his thumb stroking your waist through your hoodie.
" I love you. A lot. I know it sounds sappy, but you made my day. Truly. " He smiled, taking a sip from his mug.
" When I found out you were pregnant, I didn't know how to react. But now- I wouldn't want it any other way. Thank you for letting me see my babies first christmas, today. " He mumbled, his smile turning so fond, so sweet.
You could feel your heart clench at his words. They were all true, because you knew him. Joe wouldn't sweettalk about that if it weren't true.
" Oh- Joe.. " You smiled with a frown, standing onto your tippy toes to wrap your arms around his neck and hug him tight.
He sat his mug down, his hands circling around your back, hands rubbing broad stripes up and down. His face tucked into your neck, his eyes shutting.
Joe was never a person to let out his feelings like that. And the fact he thanked you for that kind of stuff made you fall in love with him all over again.
