unexpectedly meeting nanami's parents ( 2,878 words) by kunasmoochies 💋
a/n : can be read as teen! or college! nanami. your choice (gen reader!) they get a little sweet and sappy in this one so beware. if you cringe easily at true love.. this ain't for you!!! I introduced nanami's parents in this one & tried to keep them (& reader) as vague as possible 😭
Nanami was holding your hand like he always did. It was Thursday, which meant he waited the extra 25 minutes for your class to end.You two would head back to his dorm, and spend the rest of the evening together.
It was a simple routine: You two studying together, you sprawled on his floor, him sitting at his desk. Sharing a mug of tea, or a cup of coffee, and a few kisses here and there. You forcing him to come eat dinner with everyone. Him reluctantly agreeing, and walking with you to meet Shoko or Satoru or Suguru or Haibara (or perhaps all of them).
Slow evenings that feel like they stretch on forever. This is seceretly what Nanami looks forward to. Ending a long day, with you by his side. He sleeps better after he spends time with you. It was all he wanted out of the rest of the school year. To be with you for as long as possible- before the both of you go back to your parents for summer break.
Nanami is holding your hand as you walk side by side, steps in tandem. His parents can hear your voice down the hall. Loud and happy and excitable and boisterous. Nanami's mom smiles as she sees you both round the corner, walking together towards his dorm.
Kento is listening contently to whatever it is you're explaining to him, your bookbag strap on his shoulder. A small smile on his face and his full attention on you, until the moment is ruined when his father clears his throat. As if the bubble you and Kento operate in when you're together is popped.
Immediately you feel Kento drop your hand, distancing himself a little.
Your steps falter. Kento has never, not once, did that to you. Disregarded you as if you were a piece of trash and there wasn't a bin around. It's almost as if his hand slipped, if it wasn't on purpose. But it was.
Kento's mom catches it, her smile wavering for a second before she makes eye contact with you. She sees the confusion on your face, the brightness starting to leave your eyes just that quickly; and she feels bad.
She knows Kento has always been quiet, private and reserved. And you seem like the exact opposite; but in a good way. Truth be told she always hoped Kento would end up with his antithesis. Someone who is bright and bubbly and sociable. Someone like you.
Kento speaks quietly to his parents in the hall, as you stand a few paces behind him. You don't know what to make of this moment. You are pretty good at reading Kento's body language. Something is amiss. He doesn't really turn to include you in the conversation. He doesn't introduce you to his parents right away either. He doesn't even spare you a glance. You stand there awkwardly.
He lets out a small huff, unlocks his dorm room and shuffles his parents inside. You begin to become too aware of how your hair looks today, how his jacket falls on your body, how your confident posture starts to cave in on itself just a little.
Kento drops your bookbag by the door.
You're left standing in the doorway. Wedged between the hall and his dorm. You feel misplaced, not sure if you’re allowed to come in. Kento doesn’t even look your way while standing by his parents.
You contemplate just turning around and leaving. Fuck the bookbag- you'll get it any other time Kento isn't in a silent impasse in his mind.
Is he embarrased? You wonder, while Kento thinks about the situation at hand. You were thrusted into meeting his parents because they randomly decided to drop by on a Thursday. He hates the idea of the three people who mean the most to him meeting like this. Unplanned and off the cuff.
As if on cue, he remembers that you're standing in the doorway. He feels the shift in the air and knows that you're not going to stay, like he originally planned.
You feel as if you can't stay, as if intruding on this surprise visit is some great offense. As if your presence is ruining the moment.
You feel your heart twisting in your chest. You decide to grab your bookbag- pulling on the straps as they slide around your shoulders.
What makes the situation worse is that it feels so.. dramatic. You would love if your parents came to see you. So why are you acting as if Kento has purposely made a decision to pick them over you? You can rationalize it. They should be able to spend time with their son, without you- a literal stranger to them, leeching him away.
Just as you start to turn around and try to save whatever dignity you have, his mother speaks up.
"And who is this Kento?" She says, bright eyes focused on you, warmth seeping through her tone. Kento stammers before looking at you quickly. "Um. Just a friend, mom." He introduces you to his parents. Your first and last name falling out his mouth as if it's a secret. He looks like he wants the ground to swallow him whole.
He’s embarrassed; not necessarily because of you. But because he likes to compartmentalize his life. He is a planner at heart, so for his family to show up unannounced, it really throws him off. This is not something he expected, so to be ambushed on a random weekday- no matter how innocent it may be, a particular feeling starts to bubble inside of him. Shame.
Kento is ashamed. He feels naughty because his secret was just found out. The boring, uninteresting, super serious Nanami Kento is seeing someone. Who would have thought.
Kento has been spending his free time with you- someone who is just so breathtaking, with eyes that twinkle, and a smile that makes his heart race and a voice that carries like rain pounding on pavement. Someone who is so sweet to him even when there's no need to be. Someone whose hand is so soft in his- and who doesn't mind that his palms get a little sweaty because he still gets butterflies when you slide your fingers in between his. Someone who makes him blush just by smiling up at him, by giving him a hug after he picks you up from your last class of the day. Someone who listens to him talk and doesn't mind that he's boring (his words- not yours). Someone who savors your moments spent together just as much as he does.
Someone who is way out of his league if you ask him. You two together? It's unfathomable.
Kento knows you may think it's foolish. But he has always been a bit too proper. A bit too jaded in the way of the world. You always joke that he's been on Earth before- there's no way this is the first time his soul has graced the planet. He would smile, tell you something along the lines of how his soul has probably just been wandering, steadily reincarnating just to find you. And of course, you'd smile and blush and giggle- and watch as his ears turn red just a little. You would feel him lean into you just a tad- and you would give him a kiss. Sweet and simple and sticky from your lip gloss that you have to keep applying because most of it ends up on Kento's mouth throughout the day.
And even though you two are still young and in school- Kento knows deep in his heart, where he packs away his most intense feelings- that he has found his person. You're all he has ever wanted. His chest aches when he thinks of not being with you.
Kento didn't plan to fall in love at school- he's too young and he has his studies to focus on. But he's glad he did. Sometimes, most times, before he falls asleep- he lays in bed thinking of you. He spends minutes awake, wondering how he landed someone like you. With his offputting personality and his sarcasm and genuine lack of excitement. He chuckles to himself- calls you crazy for willingly choosing to be with him. He can't wait until you both have graduated. Then you two can talk about moving in together- or atleast finding a way to be closer.
But this is not how he wanted you to meet his parents. Of course, he's thought about what it would be like. It's one of the many scenarios he falls asleep to. Ideally, you would be meeting his parents at his family home. You'd insist on wearing matching colors with him- and of course Kento would indulge you.
Kento would sit at the dinner table, or maybe on the couch while you wowed his family with your radiant, welcoming personality. He would let you take the reigns, because you're self assured and secure in your relationship with him. His parents would inquire about what you both want to do after school is finished and you've both graduated. You would ramble off the plans that you and Kento have; and he would sit back and watch you win over his parents- with your optimistic, confident, beautiful self. Your words being plans made to come into fruition, not ideas that get swept away in the wind.
His mom would catch him in the kitchen later, the two of them cleaning the plates from dinner. And she would smile at him, and Kento would smile back and his dad would say something earnest like- "You picked a good one" and Kento would feel so overwhelmed by his parents approval of you. Because who would deny him a future with you? Who would deny him the one thing he's been so afraid to crave? Kento would feel a burst of pride, how proud he is to have you- and how proud you are to have him.
Because that's the thing. Everybody says that young love is fleeting. It's puppy love, it never lasts. The rose tinted glasses have to come off some day. But Kento knows that they're wrong. They haven't seen you two together, they haven't felt what he feels when he's with you. They don't know anything about you two. And that's how Kento likes it. He loves having you to himself, he loves having something quiet and adoring and all consuming and all his.
But he feels like you're the opposite. You love loudly, without restraint. You're proud to have him, so why wouldn't you go to the tallest building and shout it from the rooftop? Kento has never been afraid of losing people, or of people deciding that he wasn't for them. He didn't particularly care. But to finally have someone he cares about, and to have that person care about him back? He loves this feeling so much he has to rub his chest to soothe the ache.
So yes he's embarassed. And he's scared. And he's especially vulnerable when it comes to you. He wants everything to be perfect for you. He wants to introduce you into the other compartments of his life little by little- for fear that one day you'll decide you have had enough and up and leave. And Kento wouldn't survive that. He knows it.
But don't get him wrong. Kento has faith in you. You love him so securely, so affectionately, so whole heartedly, so firmly. He just doesn't want anything to sway all the love you have for him. Especially not something like being thrusted into meeting Kento's parents on a random Thursday after classes, when you're tired and hungry and drained from the day.
And being introduced as a friend at that, because Kento is apprehensive at the thought of sharing you with the world- of letting people that love him, know that he loves someone he chose. Someone that chose him.
You're so sweet. So so sweet. But you're also a little tart. Your eyes cut to him when he calls you a friend. As you lock eyes with him, you see the cogs start to turn as he realizes the grave mistake he has made. Of course you're not just a friend. You're way more than that- you both know.
You see him, just as you see through him. You can tell Kento is uncomfortable- but you don't plan for this to be the only, nor the last time you see his parents. So you push your own uneasy feelings to the side and you slip into a sharper mood. Your discernment wakes up- leaving a more piquant you, aware of the true situation unfolding, ready to get ahead of it.
"We are definitely dating" you say to his mom with a smile and a laugh. You hope you don't come off as jarring as you walk over to stand beside Kento. It's almost like a flipped picture- you and Kento standing side by side, across from his mother and father. Spitting image of sorts.
Kento beams at this. Grateful as always, that you pick up where he lacks. Where he doesn't quite meet the mark, you slide through with ease.
His moms eyes perk up, and she grins at you. "Oh my." She says, trying to contain her excitement. "How long have you two been together?"
"We've been friends for what.. maybe two years?" You turn and ask Kento. You two make eye contact and he feels like he can breathe comfortably again, seeing his reflection in your eyes.
"Right. Friends for about two years" Kento turns to look at his parents- explaining that you came in the middle of the school year. "We have been dating for the last ten months" he finishes. Kento then looks down, and grabs your hand. He turns his attention back to his parents, looking at them with his head held high.
"Oh, just shy of one year." his mother says, controlling the glee in her voice. But she can't hide the delightful smile on her face as she turns to her husband.
Kento's dad smiles back at her. It is easy to see the love between the married couple. The calm consideration they have for each other, the comfortability that is only bestowed to couples that have been together long enough. You notice that while Kento physically resembles his mother- he seems to have more of his dads personality. You add this to the impossibly long list of things you find endearing about him.
Some more small talk is had, his mom asking if the two of you would be open to going to dinner tonight. She apologizes for their intrusion- though you shoot that down with ease. Nanami's mother smiles at you brightly, explaining how they were actually on the way to see a relative a few towns over; but decided since they were close enough to stop by they might as well. Kento breathes a sigh of relief at the fact that this won't be a long visit. His range of emotions within the last hour have been all over the place, and he's a small ways from being exhausted. After tonight is over, he just wants to collapse into his bed.
You agree to go out to have dinner with them right after his mother poses the question, then you apologize for being a bit brash. Kento's parents chuckle at this- his father making an off handed remark about how easily you'll get along with Kento's mother. You smile coyly, turning your head to lightly laugh into Kento's shoulder at your outburst. He smiles and laughs a little too.
His parents head to the door to leave, with you two following behind them. You let go of Kento's hand to slide your bookbag off, leaving it right by the door once again. Kento grabs your hand in the hallway, laying quiet kisses against your knuckles. You smile, feeling the blood rush towards your cheeks, noticing that there's also a light dusting of pink across Kento's cheeks as well.
It's a quiet but comfortable walk to the elevator, then through the lobby of the dorm building. You both wait as Kento's parents walk in the parking lot to retrieve their car. You see them holding hands too, and you smile at how that may just be you two someday- a few decades in, maybe some children of your own that you can also pop in on and embarass. Still together, still in love.
You don't realize you said that part loud enough for Kento to hear. He turns to you, cradling your face towards him. "That's all I want" he says, sincerity lacing his words together; leaning in to kiss you. As quick and fleeting as the kiss is, it is enough. Your hand comes up to wipe away some of the gloss that sits at the corner of his mouth. "Me too." You tell him. Kento squeezes your hand, intertwining your fingers.
"I like them together." Kento's dad says to his wife as they drive towards you both.
"Me too." She says with a smile. "They suit each other. What a perfect pair." She says, shooting him a knowing smile.
