“no one is going to jail.” you really can’t promise that, you all covered up a murder, it’s not exactly something you can pretend never happened. “especially not you, okay?” not again, you wouldn’t let him deal with that. you’d heard about what happened after bryce’s trial, heard how he’d done time. you know justin, you know that he’s recovering and he’s doing his best. you’re not gonna let him take the heat for any of this.

“you didn’t do anything, okay? if anything happens, if we get caught...” it’s something you’ve thought of a lot, potential outcomes being on your mind pretty much all the time. “you.. we’re not gonna throw you under the bus. as few people as possible are going down for this. if we get caught we-we can’t help alex, but you and-and jess, we can keep you out of it.” jess would be hard to keep out of it, but you’re gonna try. you would try to keep alex out of it too, but you realistically know that you couldn’t possibly take the fall for everything. no one would believe that you did it. “alex is.. we can’t help him, i planted the tape, ani.. i don’t know if we can talk our way out of her lying to the cops but it.. it doesn’t have to take down more than just the three of us. i’m not gonna let that happen.”

now that had quite shocked him, to hear that coming from Justin himself. there are rare times Cyrus gets caught off guard and this was one of the times. he glanced up furrowing his eyebrows together rubbing at the back of his neck. “I..uh, man I was just caught up in everything. I’m fine..” he REALLY did not know what to say in this situation.

you’re not the best at relationship advice, certainly not with girls, but still you feel the need to try to help. you don’t know jess super well, you’re definitely more scared of her than you are friends with her, but from what you’ve noticed she’s nothing if not stubborn. “she will.” not something you can guarantee, but there’s so much history there that you can’t imagine she’d actually ignore him forever. she’d been so quick to ask you to the dance - or tell you that you were going to the dance with her - when justin was there, and you imagine that’s a way to know she still cares about him. if she didn’t care then she wouldn’t be hurting. “she’s stubborn, and scary, and totally in love with you. she'll get there. she probably just needs time.”

things have been bad lately, that much has been obvious. between monty and bryce in his head and the constant panic attacks clay was sure he was totally losing it. clearly it’s been obvious, but it must’ve been so obvious to justin. he must’ve seen it all unfolding. and then this. this would only make things worse and justin’s words confirm it. he’s arriving home a little after one in the morning, no memory of where he’d been. no memory of going to the school, no memory of donning a mask, no memory of smashing security cameras. clueless as to how much time he’d actually lost. “i’m-- i’m fine.” but it’s obvious that that isn’t true, something monty’s quick to point out from his spot on the couch. the voices in his head were intense, always there, never letting up. dr elman was supposed to make things better, but there were so many things clay couldn’t tell him about, so many demons clay had to face alone.

“i just-- i lost track of time.” though glancing down at his phone, seeing how late it is, the surprise is obvious on his face. mind tries to track back through memories of the day, work out what he last remembered doing. monty’s quick to point out that his last clear memory is over six hours ago, quick to point out that it’d been light out before he’d been here. shit. “i just.. fuck.” voice is quiet, but all of this is too much. he makes his way over to his bed, sits down slowly. he has to tell the truth, has to admit it to someone, and who better than justin. “i don’t.. i don’t know where i was. i dont.. i- i don’t remember.”

what does it say about monty that the sound of footsteps approaching him on his own property is enough to have him pulling out a knife? what does it say about how safe he feels in his own home? it’s not even dark out, justin’s footsteps weren’t even close to sounding threatening. they could’ve been anyone’s footsteps. though, maybe that was the problem. fresh bruising across his face is accountable for his jumpiness, a rough morning to say the least. it’s just lucky that justin had shown up after the chaos subsided; monty wouldn’t have reacted well to justin seeing him be in any way weak or vulnerable. with a scoff switchblade is folded up again, returned to its new home in monty’s pocket. would having it even help him? who knows, but at the very least he doesn’t think it’ll hurt him. any signs of fear have quickly been covered, but there was no doubting that the look of terror in his eyes had been obvious. “the fuck do you want, foley?”

“it’s.. it’s okay.” words are an attempt to be supportive of him, even if there’s the tiniest of shakes in your voice. you’d seen the way he could be sometimes, you’d heard stories about his impulsive behavior, but you’d never had his emotions directed at you. it had been surprising at the least, but more than anything it’d been worrying. it’s not exactly the reaction you were expecting, definitely not the one you were wanting. “it’s cool, really. i’ve seen worse reactions to better things.”
