(for clarification im riding the poverty line rn) i was talkig with my upper middle class friend a few days ago. he was one of the people who got me into hockey and i realized that one of the reasons most of my friends like basketball and soccer is bc they just Cost Less??? i mentioned liking them to my guy friend an we kinda figured out that hockey is a rich sport and soccer an stuff are Poor Sports. anyway thats a p interesting divide in my opinion (u just made me think of it sorry to bother!)

Ooh I kinda wanted to say A Thing but I didn’t want to generalize sports but I did notice something like that. Like growing up everyone around me played soccer and baseball bc it was just easier. Like playing outdoors all you needed were a soccer ball or a baseball, a glove, and a bat.

Then I got into a high school further away and in a fairly rich neighborhood and everyone played lacrosse or tennis, but mostly lacrosse. Like everyone’s house just had a dozen lacrosse sticks hanging around for the kids to play with. It was interesting to see the difference in sport of choice. Of course I haven’t done an econometric analysis of this since I have no hard data, but still, it’s been something I’ve been thinking about since I got into hockey

oh my goodness okay. i have a lot of feelings about this. and they are...not happy. like...lots of self hate. 

so Dex was raised Catholic, and he can’t shake it. he’s tried to convert, or even just stop going to mass but he can’t. 

he hates himself, when he’s at mass he hates himself because he’s gay when he’s not at mass he hates himself because he’s trans, his faith makes him hate himself and he doesn’t know how to deal with that. it’s not like it’s always at the front of his mind it comes in waves

he’s spent a lot of time praying to wake up a straight cis girl. 

being gay throws him for a loop. when he dates boys is that a sin? acting on homosexuality is a sin (so he’s been told) but does God see him as a girl? if so dating boys is....a good thing right? but he’s NOT a girl and he sure as fuck hopes God doesn't think he’s a girl. 

he cries every time he goes to mass. he can not get though “How Great Thou art” with out sobbing. 

he cries when he prays because he’s so scared,he doesn’t know what to do. how to be right but he can’t tell anyone. the Church will throw him out and everyone else just tells him to leave. no one gets it and he feels horribly alone.

(im sorry ive been thinking this for a long time and you seemed like the person to send it too, totally no pressure to answer this) the whole economic perspective of zimbits and shitty makes me so uncomfortable, the idea of being able to just, buy a new oven, or buy 15 Dozen roses is really upsetting to me. i had to stop reading fics about them basically bc of them just throwing money around. i guess im saying that yes its romantic but its somethjng only a rich kid could do and its upsetting 😬

I can sometimes manage to just accept “Okay, Jack has a ton of money and that’s just his reality.”  Sometimes. But then when I think about someone from a poor background having to deal with his mindset I’m back to it.

But in other fandoms I’ve read stories where the entire point is basically “Someone takes their rich boyfriend’s credit card and goes on a shopping spree for themselves” which is obviously like an id-fic thing where the self-indulgent spending is the entire point of the fic and that just... gives me hives? Because I was raised with SO MUCH shame and moral obligation about being financially independent and never accepting anything you haven’t earned--the kind where it’s a Massive Source of Shame to accept government assistance or charity--so like, the idea of being comfortable with spending someone else’s money is super overwhelming for me. Doing it on things not approved by the Protestant Work Ethic as Morally Acceptable? OH GOD, I struggle to do that with my own money.

(And haha I don’t write much about Shitty at all, there’s a REASON for that...)

And then I realized, I do write about these issues sometimes, when I write about working-class Kent; there was a really brief time in my life where my parents had enough money and we could all take a deep breath, and it was just like... the most amazing thing. It was like walking around with gravity halved. We were never even poor, unable to afford housing or food, just... always one or two paychecks away from it. (And one of the things they did was bring me on a weekend vacation to Las Vegas, where I was actually able to do things like go to the shows and eat at the restaurants). It lasted... maybe a year or two before it ended. And it was mindblowing and great. So I can imagine that sudden change, more than having always had money.
