if steve and bucky’s messy chemistry is enough to make them fandom’s biggest ship then why should sam be relegated this way? i appreciate nat-related ships but i often find samnat exactly where i find stucky fanaticism and it often seems used to keep them out of the way without being accused of underusing them
ugh I totally hear you. I feel like I’m airing all the laundry list of things that bug me but “pair the spare” is another one that always gets me about peripheral ships. They’re just like, blandly happy in the background in a way that I wouldn’t even notice in original fiction. Like, if you’re reading a book and it’s about the main characters (obviously) and then there are some friends in the background who are together, you’re like “okay cool whatever,” But with fic I’m like “whyyyyyyy are they together? What did they struggle with to reach this point? What problems do they face in their relationship and personal lives?” I think it’s because we do know more about them than we would if they were just background characters in a novel so I’m more invested in that relationship development than I otherwise would be, but also it’s because - as I was talking about with @inv3rtebrate - it can feel flat. Like they’re together and that’s enough, they don’t need any development. They don’t have anything going on that’s challenging them, and if they did, it doesn’t influence their role in the story. They’re set dressing.
“...why should sam be relegated this way?” Again this is totally personal and probably has a lot to do with not having delved deep enough into the ship. As it happens, in my opinion, fandom tends to write a bland Steve, but can pull off a dynamic, convincing Bucky. Bucky ships work because of Bucky, not because of Bucky/Steve. So with Sam and Steve having a potentially volatile or destructive relationship - as I believe it would be - that could actually be interesting but I don’t have faith in fandom to pull it off, enough to go looking for it. God I know I sound like the biggest bitch rn but I’ve read a lot of fics in this fandom and I’m familiar with the character trends. If there were more messy Steve/Sam chemistry in fanfic (as I can definitely see being possible from canon) I’d be down for that. Like, okay, there’s got to be a fic out there where these two adrenaline addicts, rather than facilitating actual death by rocket as I suspect they would, instead just fuck each others brains out in thinly protected public spaces while never talking about what they mean to each other and despite their escalating physical relationship are increasingly agitated, horny, and lonely because they’re feeding an addiction while avoiding a potentially painful emotional connection, and then, say, one of them falls down a manhole or hooks up with someone else and it forces them to face what they mean to each other - and they’re allowed to be mean and inconsiderate and unlikeable. I don’t read a huge amount of porn these days but I’d read that.

softurl replied to your post: tbh i hope that ugly giant noah’s arch “museum”...
noah’s ark? i was like thinking of something like the washington square arch like ‘why would dinosaurs be on a manmade structure…’
it’s called Ark Encounter and it’s a “accurate replica of Noah’s Ark” complete with dinos along with all the other animals that could apparently fit on one single boat
it cost more than $102 million to make and it’s a huge eyesore and waste

inv3rtebrate Sam/Steve is...
so is the conclusion that steve is unshippable due to his innate selfishness
No, I think he got a serious kick in the ass when Bucky came back and now Steve’s problems will never be bigger than Bucky’s problems. In fact, no one’s problems will ever be bigger than Bucky. Everyone else can go to underwater gitmo.
(In seriousness though, what’s tough about Steve is that I wouldn’t necessarily call him selfish? He’s firmly entrenched in his own way of thinking and there’s a distinct whiff of self-centeredness about it, but he’s not solely out for himself - he doesn’t put himself first, it’s not about him or about his ego. It’s more abstract than personal gratification, it’s about what he sees as fundamentally ethical and right regardless of personal cost. And since he doesn’t register the emotional toll this takes on himself, he doesn’t comprehend it in others either. He just expects people to have the same values and be willing to make the same sacrifices, and when they’re not, he tries to accept that but doesn’t fully understand it? Like when he says in Civil War “It wasn’t you, you didn’t have a choice,” and Bucky says “I know, but I still did it,” like, Steve is never going to understand that. He can try to respect it but he’s never really going to understand it because he’s shit at walking a mile in other people’s shoes, and he can try to be better at it but empathy is just not an area of strength. This does make him tough to ship because it means the other person has to do a LOT of heavy lifting, emotionally. With Bucky, he can substitute guilt for empathy and it almost kind of works...)

i think if you throw bucky and steve at each other you have two damaged individuals enabling each other tbh
It’s true. Bucky was to all appearances building a healthy, functional life for himself in Romania and now, seriously, he is never gonna be out of the radius of Steve’s bullshit. But I do think Bucky’s presence curbs Steve’s passive suicidal tendencies, so I guess that’s good.
