Instructions on how to edit the password graphic below the cut (it's simple, I promise).

If you want to use custom colors on the template and want the password animation to match, you need to download the file "password customization.psd" from the google drive linked above (graphics download) and open it in an editing software. For the sake of ease and accessibility, I'm using photopea for this, which is a free editing program that can be accessed entirely online.

1. First, open the file. It will looked jumbled in the preview; this is okay, it's meant to look like that, and the animation will display correctly when it's saved as a .gif file.

2. To change the colors, all you have to do is change the "color overlay" on the layer folders to your preferred colors. To do this, right-click on each folder that has "effects" attached to them. You'll have to do them individually but there are only four of them. Click the option that says "Blending Options" and you should see the following box pop up.

3. Click on the setting that says "color overlay". Change the color in the box indicated below to whatever color you want. Do this for all four folders. Then click on the layer that say "BACKGROUND COLOR" and fill that with whatever color you want the background to be. It needs to match the one you intend to use for your carrd or it won't be seamless.

4. When you're satisfied with the colors, all that's left is for you to save the gif. Click file > export as > .gif. BUT in order for the animation to play as intended, you have to save it with a specific setting change. Most of the time, when you go to save a gif, it sets the "repeat" factor to 0, meaning the gif will play on loop continuously. We don't want that. So we're going to set the "repeat" factor to 1, that way the gif will play only once when the card is opened.

And that's all you have to do! The gif should be good to go, just insert it on the carrd in the first image box. If you have trouble editing it on your own for whatever reason, I'd also be happy to do it for you. If you would rather not use the fake gif loading screen, you can just delete that element entirely. But you also need to delete the blue section divider beneath it that says "main", that way links to your carrd will go directly to the menu instead of the fake loading screen.

🎬 VIDEO EDITING RESOURCES

Want to try video editing, but don't know where to start? You're not alone; I've heard the same thing from many people. There are lots of hurdles: downloading episodes, finding an editing program, learning that editing program. As part of the HBO War Video Archive, I (mod @kbsd) want to do my best to remove those hurdles and make sure that anyone who wants to try video editing can do so easily. It's fun, and everyone should give it a shot! This post is not comprehensive, but will give an overview on the following:

Most of this information is not specific to HBO War, so it will hopefully be a good resource for creators in other fandoms as well!

🎥 Where can I find footage and music?

Most people pirate episodes, or find "scene packs" or "clip reels" (compilations of clips of specific character or ship) on YouTube. To make it extremely easy, I have full episode downloads of all three HBO War shows here, for anyone that would like to use them! I also put a few ship clipreels in there that I had made for my own purposes, which you're welcome to use. As for downloading music, I personally just use YouTube-to-MP3 converter websites, like this one. It's the quickest and easiest way to get usable digital versions of the songs I need, but it's not the best from a cybersecurity perspective. Instead, you can use apps like this one by MediaHuman which are clunky but a lot safer (thank you @rockpaperscissuhs for the recommendation!).

💻 What editing software should I use?

There are tons of editing programs out there. I personally use Adobe Premiere (subscription required, but you can pirate free versions...you didn't hear that from me!), but I'll stick to free programs on this post. Here are some programs that are considered intuitive for beginners: iMovie Pros: Easy-to-use interface Cons: Limited customization, not available on Windows Pinnacle Studio Pros: Windows alternative to iMovie, access to large graphics library Cons: Not available on Mac, free trial is only 15 days (but the cost of their basic program is only a one-time $30, not a monthly subscription) Movavi Pros: Good variety of filters and transitions Cons: Videos in the trial version can only be exported with a watermark A lot of editors use Capcut, which is free, easy to use, and available on both desktop and mobile. However, I don't like to recommend it because it uses AI for many features like filters and transitions, overly relies on templates in a way that I feel limits originality and creativity, and also has a very broad and non-revocable license that lets the company use anything you upload. The programs below have a steeper learning curve, and might be tougher to jump into if you don't have any knowledge of non-linear editing software. But I'll list them here for editors who want to step up their game or try something new! Lightworks Pros: Pro-level multi-track editing Cons: Lots of keyboard shortcuts to learn, slow export process DaVinci Resolve Pros: High-quality effects, powerful non-linear editing Cons: Extent of features may be overwhelming for casual editors Kdenlive Pros: High performance on less powerful hardware, good project recovery tool Cons: Possible instability/crashing, less advanced effects Openshot Pros: Customizable workspace, ready-to-use templates Cons: Nonstandard layout/workflow VSDC Pros: Non-linear editing, text animation options Cons: Nonstandard layout/workflow, no full-screen video preview CyberLink Pros: Pro-level features for free, access to stock libraries Cons: Extent of features may be overwhelming for casual editors

🎞️ How do I use my editing software?

Editing is a complex process, but to give a very simplified overview: you upload all of the clips/episodes into the program; these will live in your project/workspace as a "source." You then make a "timeline," which is where you do the editing itself. This timeline has audio tracks where you can layer music and sound from the episodes, as well as video tracks where you can lay out your clips. Non-linear editing programs let you trim and arrange these elements in any order on a timeline without altering the source clips (vs. linear editing, which requires you to work from beginning to end). You can add effects like titles (for subtitles or text graphics), transitions, color editing and filters, etc. The process for these effects will obviously be very different from program to program. Once your video is complete, you can export it as a variety of different video formats and qualities (which will also depend on the program). Note that the Tumblr size limit for a video post is 500MB, and the length limit is 10 minutes. Unfortunately, the best way to learn is to just get your hands on the keyboard and try things out. Most programs have a tutorial built in, but I highly recommended seeking out YouTube tutorials geared towards beginners; it's how I learned Premiere, and I still look up tutorials even now for features that I don't totally know how to use. For one-off questions, I find that Reddit or the dedicated support forum for the program are both very helpful for finding answers, but sitting down and watching YouTube tutorials is really the only way to get started.

🗒️ How do I plan/organize a video?

Everyone has a different process for this. Some get an idea and jump right into the studio and start editing, coming up with ideas as they go. Some (like me) make a meticulous plan, typing up all the specific shots and sound bites you want to put with specific lyrics. I personally find that having that framework makes the editing process go a lot quicker, while still letting me make creative decisions/changes in the moment. I explained my personal, elaborate process here, but I am not the authority! Many people plan out lyric-shot matches using a two-column spreadsheet, and many simply have the plan in their head. I have a general video help tag where I've answered some questions about editing/producing, but I also encourage you to ask those questions to your favorite video editors, and see how they operate! Don't reinvent the wheel, but take those ideas and customize them to what works for you.

🖥️ How do I post my video?

If you have an account with them, you can post a video on YouTube or Vimeo and then embed that video link in a Tumblr post, or you can post the video file directly to Tumblr. It often takes a while for the direct videos to process once you click "Post," and it's often unpredictable exactly how long, so I would recommended selecting "Save as Draft" instead. This way you can double check the formatting of your caption and make sure it's processed, then choose to publish the draft instantly whenever you want. Tumblr transcodes and re-compresses all uploaded videos, which means they will reprocess whatever you post to their own settings. Those settings are 720p H.264 MP4, so it's helpful to export your video as close to those settings as possible to avoid a drop in quality when they re-compress it. A really easy solution regardless of what editing program you're using is to run your finished video through Handbrake and use the Web -> Creator 720p60 preset with no modifications. This will get your video to Tumblr's transcoder goal and avoid quality decay (thank you @stevieroqers for the tip!).

This is so cheesy, but the single most important part of this whole process is to enjoy it, and not take yourself too seriously. Your video doesn't have to be perfect right away; what matters is that you're trying an exciting new form of fanwork, and sharing it with people! Short answer, yes.

Longer answer, it's not as intimidating as you might first think! Most IFs you'll find on here will be using Twine, Ren'py, and to a lesser extent Unity and ChoiceScript.

Twine and ChoiceScript are both HTML based and I'd argue are the easiest to learn because of that. Twine has their reference guide with a bunch of documentation. Choicescript is a bit sparser, but there is a wiki that has all the commands specific to it as well as a software called ChoiceScriptIDE made by the community around it to make it easier to use. I personally use that software to just streamline the work process since it eliminates some of the work you'd need to do if you if you were working in a raw HTML file, but it has it's limitations like not being able to utilize things like JavaScript for things like advanced math. Most people using it won't need to worry about JavaScript though, I just like to complicate things. Some games that use Twine are Wayfarer and A Tale of Crowns. Any game on CoGDemos is using ChoiceScript but you can also find them on Itch.io like VTM -Blood Frontier. For just help with HMTL in general, W3 Schools is a pretty good resource.

Ren'py is one that isn't HTML based. It uses it's own scripting language, but is based in Python. However, they have a built in tutorial on how to use it in engine as well as the documentation previously mentioned! I myself haven't used Ren'py, so I can't really comment on how it feels to use, but it's more for if you're wanting to make something like a visual novel. However a lot of people use it, so it's probably a very good engine to use if that's what you're going for. Some game's that use Ren'py are A Date with Death, Doki Doki Literature Club, and Butterfly Soup.

Last there's Unity. This one requires the most knowledge about coding, specifically knowledge in C#, and would really only be suited for what you want to work on if you want to make more of a game and less of a novel. However there are some really amazing works that have been made using Unity, one of my favorite being a game called A Day of Maintenance.

Overall, you need to think about what you want to make and which one would be bested suited for you. If you want to focus on writing and having something that if completely text-based, go with Twine or ChoiceScript. If you want some variation in appearance and an easier time customizing the look, I'd go with Twine. If you want something like a visual novel, go with Ren'py or a similar engine. And if you want to make something that is more of a game or would function or play differently than the previous ones, go with Unity but be prepared to learn a lot more if you don't already know how to use it.

A Party To Die For Templates: SFS

So I may have got a tad overexcited about the Halloween CAS Challenge created by @la-llama-sims, and I made templates for every prompt. I wanted to share them on the off chance someone wanted to also do the challenge but maybe didn't have time to do much other than screenshots.

Tutorial below on how to make your own cards using the templates if you are unfamiliar with photo software, all you need is the template and a screenshot of your sim! Very little technical skill required to so feel free to jump in for Simblreen (the month of October on simblr). Remember to go to the original creator post to check out the prompts and the hashtag given for creations is #LLPTDF. Hope to see some of your creations next month, keep them for the spooky season 🎃👻🦇

Strap in and follow along as I make Glenn here (he won't do the spellcaster prompt for Simblreen, it's dress up after all, but it makes sense for a demo)

Step one: Grab the zipped folder of templates on SFS HERE. Unzip the folder and put it somewhere easy to find in your documents, I have a tumblr specific folder my templates are normally sorted in.

Step two: Open your photo editing program of choice. I use paint.net which is old but for this demonstration I will use Photopea, the online free alternative to adobe. You will see the screen below

Step three: Click "Open From Computer" right in the middle under the main title. Find the screenshot you have taken that you would like to use and open it. Now the hole in my template is 744x991 but you can make it slightly bigger if you don't want to fuss as much with lining things up exactly. To resize image from the top bar (Image -> Image Size) We're going to use the crop tool when we have our picture.

Step four: Pull on the squares at the edges to change the size. If you need click View in the top bar and you can zoom in to allow finer selecting. When you have the right size click the tick and copy the image. Keyboard shortcuts are Ctrl+A to select all, then Ctrl+C to copy.

Step five: Open the template you want to use (File -> Open, from the top bar). Add a new layer using either the top bar (Layer -> New -> Layer) or the icons on the bottom right.

Step six: With the new layer selected paste the image, Ctrl+V.

Step seven: On the right of the screen you'll be able to see layer order. Drag the layer with your sim underneath the background layer. This is what will let you slot in your picture.

Step eight: Finishing touches! Unless you are super duper lucky your sim won't appear in the exact right place, you'll have to move them around using the move tool. For precision you'll need to zoom in and move your field of vision using the hand tool.

You'll know it's in the right place when you can no longer see any of the negative space behind it. I like to check both corners to make sure I've got it. This is where having a sim image slightly larger will make it easier.

If you like you can finish now. From the top bar File -> Export as -> PNG or JPG. The picture will save to your downloads folder. If you want to add your own text, keep reading, as I've left space at the bottom for your username, the sim name, and a profile pic or other logo. Or go ahead and crop it out, who needs extra hassle when there are cute CAS looks to be made?

Step nine: From the bar on the right select the large T to add some text, it will automatically spawn in a new layer. Scroll through text options and find one you like (the text style I used isn't in photopea so we will find another). Depending on the type of text you will likely need to play around with the size as well.

Step ten: Start typing. When you're done you can highlight what you have written and use that size box to adjust how big the text is. Select the move tool from the right to move your text where you want it. Repeat step nine if you want text on the other side. I've chosen to put my username on one side, and my sim's name on the other.

Step eleven: Logo time. Open a pre shrunk logo (I scaled my pride plumbobs down to 125x125) and copy. Back on the template add a new layer then paste your image (for some reason I had to copy twice before it would do the right thing, I don't have an explanation sorry). Then using the move tool and the hand tool get your image where you want it.

From the top bar File -> Export as -> PNG or JPG. Again it will have saved to your downloads folder.

Voila, we have a Glenn card! Hopefully you have a your sim card. I spent hours doing up all the templates so feel free to fill them with your sims for the challenge. All I ask is that you don't claim templates as your own work or shove them behind a paywall because rude and the whole premise of Simblreen is free treats! Obviously you do NOT need the templates to participate in the challenge, the cards are just how I'll be presenting mine. Like CAS challenges the possibilities are most often only limited by your imagination.

I'd love to, but honestly I'm not sure how much help my experience will be! Honestly I just. Started searching for tutorials on my own. I didn't know any comic folks well enough to ask them and nobody around me could help so I did all the research myself lmao. That initial research broke it down into two steps, for this purpose: Find a host, then install website software on it.

So I found a host, bought the domain and did a metric asston of googling to figure out how to install wordpress with comicpress, which is the website template most comic sites use.

Of course, after that you can play with the css and add whatever pages you like, which for me was ALSO just googling how the hell to code individual things I wanted to do. My website is janky as hell! I am not a coder and it was an extremely frustrating process for me! I still fight with it pretty often hehe. But it was only that way because I have such specific ideas of what I wanted, I'm a bit of a control freak. Comicpress has an amount of customization built into it, and there's nothing wrong with a nice clean layout you don't have to babysit so much; it really only needs to be as complicated as you choose for it to be.

Hosting fees are scary, but as for the elbow grease portion it's certainly something I think anyone can do with enough determination!! It will require quite a bit of research on your own for wildly specific things no one else seems to have ever wanted, but that's just making webcomics in general lmao. Get your hands dirty, make a bunch of mistakes. You can always install a clean template if you fuck it up too badly!
