Leap Year Bug Knocks Out SpaceX Rival's Satellite Network
A competitor to SpaceX's Starlink has experienced a network outage due to a software error related to the leap year, highlighting the importance of thorough testing in space technology.
Why is a Software bug known as a bug? . . On September 9, 1947, the world's first computer bug was recorded. But this was no ordinary ‘software bug’. It was a real-life Moth causing issues with the computer’s hardware. This “first actual case of bug being found" was recorded by computer scientist Grace Hopper.
Main Reasons for Software Defects
A software defect (a bug) is an error in a program that causes it to work incorrectly and (or) unpredictably. A software defect definition also includes the difference between the actual and expected result.
As bugs in software are made while writing the code, your software may not perform the pre-planned features, work in a way that differs from your specifications, or perform actions that it shouldn’t. Such cases are called program failures.
We have outlined 5 main reasons for software defects:
Lack of team communication
Business requirements can sometimes not reach the development team. The client has an understanding of how they want the finished product to work. However, if their idea is not properly explained to your dedicated development team and QA specialists, the result may not be as expected.
Requirements should be available and understandable to all those involved in the software development process.
2. The complexity of your software
Modern software consists of components that are combined into complex software systems. Multithreaded applications, client-server, distributed architecture, multi-tier databases… Software solutions are becoming more difficult to build and maintain.
The more complex the work on your software is, the more mistakes your software might contain.

Here’s another oldie from several years ago. Back in January of 2016, I discovered this easy to reproduce crash with a luxury fashion app from a company called Moda Operandi. This crash happened with version 2.4 of their app.
Moda Operandi is now up to version 4.2.2, and this crash no longer occurs. It was the first time I had seen a crash from backing out of an invalid email address warning message. You can read about the crash at the link.

Another long ago bug - this one was about a minor bug called Peach. This bug was written in January of 2016. I wasn’t able to see if this bug is still active, as I was unable to create a new Peach account in February of 2019. According to a note in the App Store the Peach app hasn’t been update for about a year, but it is still supported.

Here is another bug from way back in January 2016. This one is with the OpenTable app. This bug has also been long fixed. The previous problem of being stranded on an unresponsive screen has been fixed with an error message. In addition the user is long longer stranded.
Here is an image of the error message that replaced the unresponsive error screen.

Here is an old bug that has long since been fixed. Back in January of 2016, I wrote about a minor problem with the Instacart app for iOS. On an iPad Mini, if you backed out of the “Connect with Google” option, you were returned to mismatched UI on an account creation screen.
Not a major bug, but it was unusual to see this happen from backing out of the Google login process.
