Hey so, quick question for anyone with chemistry/soil knowledge out here:

What does “NH,-N” and “NO,-N” stand for in this sentence?

“In some cases, however, NH,-N, NO,-N, pH, electrical conductivity, and some other properties are determined on moist samples (field condition) immediately after arrival at the laboratory.”

I did a basic chemistry class but I can’t say I’m understanding the meaning here. For context, this is on soil sciences. Any clues? If I gotta translate this sentence, I need to understand it first!

Why....is all the stuff I want all science-y? Just gimme a layman’s version of wth ‘permanganate oxidizable C‘ is supposed to measure for soil sciences!

(something about the amount of Carbon in a soil sample, that’s all I’ve got...)

Women scientists rock.

Without Ada Lovelace’s algorithms, we wouldn’t have computers. Without Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring, the contemporary global environmental movement wouldn’t exist. Without Marie Curie’s groundbreaking research into radioactivity, we wouldn’t know the connection between radiation and tumor growth.

Without women in science, the world as we know it would be a very different place.

So, in honor of Women’s History Month, let’s honor the women scientists of WSU who work each and every day to make the world brighter. Let’s honor the women who study hibernating bears to understand diabetes and heartdisease in humans, who work to bridge the gap between food scientists and policymakers, who teach engineering students how to create green buildings, and more.

Let’s honor them and everything they do because, as we said, women scientists rock.
