Given the physical similarities there's some kind of reciprocal ripping off between Level 5 and Game Freak between Tirno and Trevor vs Eddie and Bear. But then those two are rip offs of the fat kid and nerdy kid from Mega Man Star Force. Is there a mono myth for useless JRPG comic relief?

To be fair, XY and YW were in development at around the same time, so I imagine it’s just a coincidence. The whole “fat guy and scrawny guy” duo has always been a popular template for comic relief - Wario and Waluigi, Bebop and Rocksteady, Roadhog and Junkrat, the list goes on. The difference with Trevor and Tierno was that they were completely and utterly forgettable despite randomly showing up every few towns.
