Karina Soldatova

“I was born in Apatity - a town in the Murmansk district. I started dancing at four and dreamed about becoming a ballerina. At ten, I decided to try and make my dream come true. The thing is, Vaganova Ballet Academy only accepts ten year-olds, no one older or younger. My mom and I were travelling through St Petersburg on our way back from a holiday, so I only had one chance to get into the academy. Amazingly, I did it! I got in and finished middle school, but during my senior year, when everyone is looking for a job and trying their strength, I got sick. The diagnosis turned my life around completely and blocked my way to the stage.” - Karina Soldatova, May 2017.

Karina Soldatova can’t proceed with further treatment because she’s fighting a serious infection. Her family are asking everyone to pray for their daughter.

I just realised that since my audience is primarily English-speaking, few people may know that Karina Soldatova’s last name translates roughly as “soldier”. 

She sure fought like one.

A quick note...

...and some responses.

I currently have a backlog of requests to voice my opinion on various dancers in Ask. I’m very flattered that you guys are interested in my opinion, and I apologise for the delay. Today (or tomorrow, depending on where in the world you are) is a rather special, albeit sad, day and I have a bunch of posts pre-planned, so my opinions will have to wait till Saturday or Sunday. I promise I’m not ignoring you.

I’ll quickly respond to some of the questions that came through overnight to get them out of the way, and will get on with the program.

Hi I think malipu posted about Karina on her insta story. What did it say?

I received a private message about Karina yesterday but was (still am) hesitant to post it. In the last 48 hours a message has gone around saying that Karina’s cancer has returned and that she requires urgent medical help overseas. The post includes instructions on where and how one can transfer money to help Karina. What slightly bothers me is that this message hasn’t been posted on any of VBA’s official pages (they are usually all over this). I am waiting to confirm if this is legit before I ask anyone to transfer money to these accounts. 

EDIT: to the anon, who messaged me regarding this, I will definitely keep everyone informed. I’m just trying to err on the side of caution.

Where can we watch the Fort Boyard with Nikolai?

Not a clue. It’s probably out there somewhere. I watched it a few years ago and haven’t looked for it since. Like I said, that program really weirded me out and I have no desire to revisit it.

What do you mean by Filin and Tsiskaridze writing love notes in a previous answer? Were they romantically involved?

Jesus, of course not. I knew someone would jump to this conclusion. Someone always does. The concept of two men being best friends and having a very loving and supportive relationship seems utterly incomprehensible to a lot of people. Nikolai and Sergei used to write each other notes, professing their support and love for each other. The notes came up during the fallout of 2013, when Nikolai found one while cleaning out his dressing room. I think some journalist was encouraging him to publish the correspondence, but he (obviously) refused. Note: If you have a BBF and haven’t ever told them that you love them... why?! I’ve certainly expressed such sentiments to those near and dear to me (in written and verbal form), and I’m not exactly a very touchy-feely person. Lyanna Mormont is my spirit animal.

EDIT: I was informed that my response to the last question was harsh. I stand by my words. The response may appear forceful but I would hardly qualify it as harsh. Then again, I’ve spent the last few weeks reading ballet message boards on which people wish each other (their children, their coaches and everyone in between) injury and death, so my definition of “harsh” may be different to yours. It also appears that Filin, Dmitrichenko and Tsiskaridze have been locked in another three-way media crossfire over the last two days, and I accidentally stumbled right into the middle of it. Now I just feel stupid and annoyed.
