He doesn’t remember much before the fall. He just remembers being emerged by cold, cold water. The way it bit at his skin, turned his senses numb. James was certain he was going to die then, but at least……. At least he would die as the war hero both he and Steve always wanted to be.
Except, he wasn’t like Steve. He did not carry justice on his shoulders as much as his best friend did. Did not want to fight for the underdog, but because it was simply what was right. No, he already accepted the fact that he will never be as great of a person as Steve Rogers. Which somehow made dying seem so….. Easy.
James Barnes had accepted death, so when he woke up a century later in a completely different time period, he was at a loss. How could this have happened? He doesn’t remember much that first few days. Most of it was spent trying to adjust to this new setting, wrap his head around the fact that he had somehow survived. That everyone he knew and loved was gone. Or, so he had thought.
She briefed him in on what was going on. Natasha, she said her name was. On everything she knew. From fighting off aliens to the most mundane things as they flew down to the States. In truth, Bucky wasn’t sure how well he was handling all of this new information ———– but the only thing that mattered to him was the fact that Steve was alive.
When the doors to the elevator hissed open, both his and Natasha’s head whipped up. In an instant, the soldier was on his feet, an easy smile on his lips.
“Did you get a new uniform? I hate it.”
