The future is about to look a little more Cyberpunk!! In a cool way, though.
So I don't know if anyone knows this but
Holograms are real now. Yeah. Holograms.
Well, maybe not exactly like THAT but we're a hell of a lot closer to seeing this sort of suspended light display in the near future now thanks to a San Jose, CA, USA company called Light Field Lab [link to their webpage]
Interested?
Me too, dog. Holy crap.
How's it work? Are these true holograms for real? Like light suspended in air to form a 3D image?
Yes and no. Don't panic - it's still very adjacent to what science-fiction has imagined for us. They actually call it SolidLight. Here's a quote from their website:
"SolidLight is unlike anything you’ve experienced before. This is beyond holograms. SolidLight is the next generation of display combining unprecedented resolution and density to accurately project dimensional wavefronts to form objects that escape the screen and merge with reality."
It's all very vaguely described on their site but I think that's probably a bit of intentional PR work to protect their technology from onlookers. Opensource would be nice but will never happen. Not when there are pockets to be filled.
Still, convinced this is fake? It better not be because I'm literally so stoked about it lol But here's a video:
Companies like Verizon Wireless have already bought in for future advertising. Also 5G is definitely needed to allow for the sheer magnitude of data I'm sure these SolidLight displays require when running in real time... This is gonna be so preem.
