Happy Winter Solstice! The Christian celebration of Christmas is a synthesis of winter festivals from the ancient world: the Solstice, the Roman Saturnalia, the Dies Natalis of Sol Invictus, and the Jewish festival of light. Ancient Rome used the Julian calendar and the winter solstice took place on December 25. That date was important to worshippers of the sun god because it marked the" rebirth of the sun," or the day when the sun began returning to the sky for longer and longer periods each day.
