     “man, laura and i are gong through some shit.” sonny starts this as he and nina walk out of the bodega. he’d promised to walk her home when she came in to get a late night slushie and  he may or may not have closed shop just a tad bit early to do so. ( yes, he definitely did. ) he stuck his hands in his pockets as he went on, “it’s like, nothing i do can her her happy. well, except for... ya tú sabes.” he laughs at his own joke before looking over at her. “i don’t know, has she said anything to you about me? i know you’re not close and all, but anything helps.”

     “Aye, Usnavi’s been weird ever since abuela, uh ---” He clears his throat. Pauses. Chooses his words carefully. “ --- left. I mean, like, really weird.”

     coming to the restaurant, it was quite obvious sonny was out of place. this wouldn’t be where he would choose to have a first date, but he wasn’t the one choosing --- the tiny app device in his pocket was. he looks around and his pocket vibrates. he pulls out the device and looks down at the text it’s sent: seated in the back right corner. he looks up, finally catching the other’s eye. he walks up to the table, his hands in his pockets before he sits down. “so, looks like you beat me here,” he starts with a smile. “i’m sonny.”

     He had heard that Nina was back in town --- and by heard, he had nagged Usnavi until the elder had spilled the beans on when she was coming back. This would be the first time in a while that the once bright-eyed child in the barrio would finally get to talk to her that wasn’t through long ranged texts or calls with terrible reception. ( Clashing schedules, continuous adulthood, etcetera never made for good times for a meetup. ) However, he wasn’t throwing away his shot this time.

     He stood at her door, a bouquet of flowers in tow, a smile slapped on his face. He knocked rapidly, almost annoyingly, while calling out, “Nina! Nina. Your FAVORITE’S here. Aye, and he got better looking, too!”
